Girls on the Run combines training for a 5K (3.1 miles) running event with healthy living education. Our programs instill self-esteem through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships, and physical training - all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community.

Sarasota Girls Inc. Global Film Fest- For, by and about Girls!film fest

The Sarasota Girls Inc. Global Film Festival presented by the Joy McCann Foundation was held on March 29, 2012 at GWIZ. The festival was open to girls ages 5-14 (films were watched in two age groups: 5-9 year olds and 10-14 year olds). This one evening festival was the culmination of the first ever "Sarasota Girls Inc. Global Film Festival" which seeks to encourage girls to have a dialogue with girls about films that are relatable, original and impactful for girls. This film festival is produced in Association with the International Children's Media Center and curated by Nicole Dreiske, ICMC's Executive Director.

The "Best of Fest" Prize was awarded to the film that received the most votes from the audience for inspiring girls to be "strong, smart and bold." The 2012 SGIGFF Best of Fest winner is:

Gorilla (Finland) Directed by Hanna Bergholm

During the month of February and March, films were viewed by two separate juries of girls at Girls Incorporated. The films entered offered a fresh vision for girls with high artistic quality in cinematography, script, sound, acting, and editing. Most importantly, the films that participated in the festival portray girls as strong, smart and bold, encouraging them to develop and act on these traits. Winners from the girls' juries are as follows:

K-3rd Girls' Jury         Tung's Film (Vietnam) Directed by Annie Gibbs

4-8th Girls' Jury           Lioness of Lisabi (USA) Directed by Vlady Valentin Oszekiel                                           Script: Stephanie Shonekan

Summer of Innovation for Girls Inc. Girls!

Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County has been awarded a grant for the implementation of NASA's Summer of Innovation (SoI) program. The initiatives goal is to use its out-of-this-world missions and technology programs to boost summer learning, particularly for underrepresented students across the nation. NASA's Summer of Innovation supports President Obama's Educate to Innovate campaign for excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, education.

The Summer of Innovation program will work with thousands of middle school teachers and students during multi-week programs in the summer of 2012 to engage students in stimulating math and science-based education programs. NASA's goal is to increase the number of future scientists, mathematicians, and engineers, with an emphasis on broadening participation of low-income, minority students.

"We are thrilled to deliver SoI programs to our girls," says Marisa Monroe, Director of Programming for Girls Inc. "Science, math and technology are areas that we believe our girls critically need and the opportunity to partner with NASA places our girls at a distinct advantage for learning."
