SPRING BREAK IS HERE AND OUR GIRLS ARE MAKING THE MESSAGE!
Spring break for most kids means watching a lot of television, playing video games and hanging out at the mall.  But for the girls of Girls Inc. it means "making the message."
Throughout February girls  spent a month-long intensive study of the Girls Incorporated Media Literacy program.  Girls increased their awareness of the scope and power of the media and the effects of media messages on girls and women.  They learned to analyze critically what they see and hear  in the media, advocate formedia change in entertainment, news, and advertising media, and create images that are more realistic and reflective of their lives. You will be able to hear some of the interesting things the girls learned at the 24th Annual Celebration Luncheon on March 20th so we hope you can join the girls!

Here are some of the exciting components that girls are working on:

  • meeting with publishers from the Herald Tribune, Observer, Sarasota Magazine, Scene Magazine, West Coast Woman and SRQ Magazine to learn about careers in media.  Field trips are planned to each office
  • working with Clark Advertising to develop full ad campaign about Girls Inc. to be published in printed publications all over Sarasota
  • working with film students from the University of Tampa to create a documentary
  • participating in the first ever Sarasota Girls Inc. Global Film Festival which includes girls jurying films for, by and about girls with a final film event on Thursdsay, March 29th at GWIZ and is open to girls 5-14 in the community
  • guest speakers to talk about media images and a healthy self image
  • thoughtful discussions about what are good role models in the media right now
