Girls practicing such discipline to save $100 Dream Dollars by the end of the school year will be invited to a special after-hours party here at the center. The savings race is on!

Media Mania!

Throughout the month of February girls are preparing for "Media Mania."  A month long intensive study of the Girls Incorporated Media Literacy program.  Girls increase their awareness of the scope and power of the media and the effects of media messages on girls and women.  They learn to analyze critically what they see and hear  in the media, advocate formedia change in entertainment, news, and advertising media, and create images that are more realistic and reflective of their lives.  The

culmination of the lessons will be presented at the 24th Annual Celebration Luncheon on March 20th so tune in for more on this developing story!

Here are some of the exciting components that girls are working on:

  • meeting with publishers from the Herald Tribune, Observer, Sarasota Magazine, Scene Magazine, West Coast Woman and SRQ Magazine to learn about careers in media.  Field trips are planned to each office
  • working with Clark Advertising to develop full ad campaign about Girls Inc. to be published in printed publications all over Sarasota
  • working with film students from the University of Tampa to create a documentary
  • participating in the first ever Sarasota Girls Inc. Global Film Festival which includes girls jurying films for, by and about girls with a final film event on Thursdsay, March 29th at GWIZ and is open to girls 5-14 in the community
  • guest speakers to talk about media images and a healthy self image
  • thoughtful discussions about what are good role models in the media right now

GOTRLOGOGirls On The Run Needs Your Support Today!

Girls on the Run combines training for a 5K (3.1 miles) running event with healthy living education. Our programs instill self-esteem through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships, and physical training - all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community.

Each year we have more and more girls on the waiting listing for scholarships to enroll in the program.  The story of two sisters from North Port who need $192 (or an 80% scholarship). Their mom does the best she can for the girls and recognizes the importance of having the girls in the program.  Their mom is permanently disabled from a car accident caused by an uninsured motorist and is still going through surgeries. On top of medical bills and medical issues, their home was also severly flooded.  There are more girls with stories similar to this story.  If you would like to help please contact Dawn Wiley at dawn@girlsincsrq.org or call 366-6646 x 202 for more information.

We're also gearing up for our Girls on the Run 5K on Friday, April 27 at 6:30pm at South Lido Beach. Program and 5K volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are still available. Contact Kay at kay@girlsincsrq.org or 941-366-6646 ext 207 for more information on how you can help provide this amazing program for girls throughout Sarasota County.
