Highest Honor Awarded to Girls Inc. MicroSociety!
Girls Inc. of Sarasota County has just been named an "exemplary model of practice" in MicroSociety® Learning Environments. This coveted and prestigious award is given out annually by MicroSociety® which is a national nonprofit organization specializing in motivating students to succeed using authentic, real-world learning environments. Girls Inc. was designated as the only 4-STAR nationally certified afterschool site.
"Dream Harbor" is the name of the Girls Inc. MicroSociety® society and operates as a fully functioning city with elected government officials, a bank, post office, library and businesses including; boutiques, a catering business and a science museum. During the school year a mediation program was initiated in order to provide conflict resolution training for the "peacekeepers" whose job it is to keep girls safe within the city. Another major component of the award is Girls Inc.'s ability to move the girl's businesses into a real world environment. As part of Girls Inc.'s annual fundraiser, The Celebration Luncheon, girls present a "Micro Market" as a pre -event shopping treat for 900 guests. Over 75 girls exhibit their products based on the theme, with over $3,000 being raised to support Girls Inc.'s MicroSociety® program.
"This award indicates to Girls Inc. staff and supporters that when you push for the best programs and services for our girls, the results are nothing short of spectacular," says Stephania Feltz, Executive Director. "When you believe in girls and let them know that there are no boundaries to success, they rise to the occasion effortlessly. Our girls deserve the very best and we are thrilled that this award affirms that we are providing the very best." Plans for next year include the creation of a non-profit led by one of the young girls, the introduction of credit cards into the financial functions of the society and the creation of a city charter.

In the News: WSSB Girl TV!
Here is a quick glimpse of the recent special projects WSSB Girl TV has been working on that will appear in upcoming episodes. Our own Kiara, age 10, was part of a small group of media professionals covering former First Lady Laura Bush's Town Hall Series lecture. A team of girls served as the film crew for a local chef creating an TV audition video. Another team has been interviewing experts who will be leading workshops at the Celebrate Wellness Fest on March 10 and 11, benefiting Girls Inc. Be sure to tune in on Saturdays at our new time, 12 noon on ABC7 to see these exciting stories and so much more! Missed an episode? No problem. Visit our YouTube channel and watch anytime! |

Girls hit the court!
A big thank you to IMG Academy and IMG staff member Laura Hope for connecting our girls to the women's basketball program at IMG. Because of their partnership, girls have been learning the basics of basketball once a month from the women's team. Girls were even invited to IMG to take a tour, watch a practice and were given the opportunity to do some drills on the big court! Thank you also to volunteers Bill Johnson and Kay and Kim Anderson for your help inspiring the girls to believe they all have an inner athlete. |

Get on the Run with Girls On The Run
Girls on the Run is preparing for our most exciting season yet. New schools have been added to roster. New coaches have come aboard. Existing sites have wait lists. Girls on Track, the middle school component of Girls on the Run, will also be debuting this spring at Sky Academy in Venice and Imagine School in North Port. Girls, parents, coaches and supporters were introduced to Molly Barker, the founder of Girls on the Run International, and Liz Kunz, the President, at a meet and greet hosted by New Balance Sarasota and Molly's Chic Boutique. We're also gearing up for our Girls on the Run 5K on Friday, April 27 at 6:30pm at South Lido Beach. Program and 5K volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are still available. Contact Kay at kay@girlsincsrq.org or 941-366-6646 ext 207 for more information on how you can help provide this amazing program for girls throughout Sarasota County. |
