Volunteer Spotlight
For Kay and Kim Anderson, Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County is a calling. These sisters mark the longest serving volunteers in Girls Inc. history with their first day at Girls Inc. over 20 years ago. They can recall what Girls Inc. looked like back in the late 80's and remark how far Girls Inc. has come. Still the girls and their needs remain the same, so when the sisters came back to Girls Inc. after the passing of their mother whom they cared for around the clock for 14 years, they found themselves right at home.
Kim and Kay picked up where they had left off. Their list of time and talents are many including the Ms. Fix It Club where the girls learned how to take things like dishwashers, bikes and toasters apart and put them back together (for the most part). Sports also played a major role in their contribution. Both sisters have an undeniable way of getting girls to at least try tossing a ball and to consider themselves each athletes even though that concept seems foreign to most of the girls involved in the activities. One of their largest endeavors this summer was a five-day-a- week "Boot Camp." Kay and Kim spent time with girls who just needed extra motivation to get healthy and feel good about themselves. Every day between 3:30-4:30pm the girls voluntarily gave up snack and free time to run laps, do jumping jacks, learn boxing, Zumba and even Nia. They got pedometers for the girls to track how much activity they did during just one hour and by the end of the summer the class grew from 5 girls to 25 girls!
Most importantly, Kim and Kay formed invaluable relationships with the girls and that has translated into mentoring and tutoring girls who are at risk socially and educationally. Their several day commitment to Girls Inc. is remarkable considering that they own and run their own company, Quest Outfitters. Thank you Kim and Kay for all that you have done to help "inspire the girls to be strong, smart and bold."
