Girls Inc. Girls Take On New York!

Congratulations to Gabrielle Holt, PJ Lewis, Fia Nicolosa, Meghan Gaitens and Jennifer Fulkert. corp campThese five high school girls took on New York at the 2011 Girls Inc. Corporate Campsm for Entrepreneurs sponsored by Sam's Club Giving Program. The girls were one of four teams selected from across the U.S. and Canada for the all-expense-paid trip based on their unique service idea and business plan. The six-day camp gave the girls a hands-on opportunity to build leadership and financial skills while exploring the benefits and challenges of business ownership with successful women entrepreneurs. These women included Alexandra Lebenthal of Alexandra and James, Saifra and Romaana Zia of Nyla Noor, Joyce Chang of JP Morgan Chase, Karen Solomon of Gensler, and Marsha Firestone of Women Presidents' Organization. The girls also participated in marketing workshops by Kristine Mudd of Muddpuppy and by Nicolecorp camp2 Lefevbre of Gensler. Claudia Ruffin provided individual and team coaching on presentation skills. Ann Sardini, CFO of Weight Watchers, and her team provided a financial workshop and business plan feedback. The team toured MacKenzie-Childs housewares and JP Morgan Chase trading floor. In addition, the girls received coaching on preparing for college, internships and networking from Ebony Thomas of Prudential. Experiencing New York was also built into the camp with a boat tour, dinners in Time Square, and bowling in Harlem.

A special thanks to volunteers Flori Roberts, Roxanne Joffe and CAP Marketing, and Hal Munter for their assistance and support of the team during the application process.

Have you ever wondered about the difference Girls Inc. really makes in the life of a little girl?  A parent of an 11-year old who attended Girls Inc for the first time this summer recently sent us this note:

"My daughter felt so proud of herself last night as she talked for the first time about being popular and part of a group and beginning to handle confrontation with a bit more confidence.   It is really difficult to manage as a single mother without family in the area.  I truly am so grateful for Girls Inc. and all you do for the girls.  The programming is changing my daughter's life and helping her to grow and heal."

How can you make a difference in the life of a little girl?  Barbara Cervasio, a snowbird from Katonah, New York is finding out.  She learned from her friend Tracy Davis, who volunteers at Girls Inc., that some girls had to be turned away from summer camp because all the scholarship dollars had been awarded.  She sent a very generous gift to Girls Inc. to make it possible for 5 girls to attend Girls Inc. summer camp for 10 weeks.  Barbara told us, "My son went to summer camp and he loved it.  I didn't want any little girl to miss the experience of going to camp.  We give because we can."  Barbara will be following in Tracy's volunteer footsteps when she returns to Sarasota in January.  She has already agreed to talk to the girls about the importance of good nutrition -- and how to understand the labels on the food we purchase. Thank you, Barbara.
