Career Thursdays

This summer Girls Inc. invited a series of professional women to introduce our girls a wide array of professions they might like to learn about and consider.

Each speaker shares
with a different MicroSociety business about how they became
interested in their profession, what skills and education were needed to be employed in the field, and what likes and dislikes they had about their work.  Thank you to our wonderful women who represent strong, smart and bold everyday!

"If you empower adolescent girls who are the mother of every child yet to be born - if they have more resources, better health, more empowerment, more of a role in their communities, decision making, they can delay marriage and become better educated - they have so much more to offer their sons, their daughters in that next generation." Girls Inc. Girls Head to New York!

sams

Girls from Girls Inc. of Sarasota County are heading to New York City to participate in Girls Inc. Corporate Camp for Entrepreneurs.

Gabrielle Holt, Jennifer Fulkert, Meghan Gaitens, PJ Lewis and Fia Nicolos worked weekends and nights with volunteers Roxanne Joffe and Flori Roberts to create a new product idea to develop. Each person on the team takes on a role - CEO, Finances, Marketing, Sales, and Product Development.  Then the team develops the business plan. Through this process the girls experience the business planning process. This camp provides girls with many tools to teach them about professional development in business and stimulate their thinking about entrepreneurial opportunities that exist for women.

During the Corporate Camp in New York, the girls will meet with women business leaders and entrepreneurs.  The particpants of the Camp are strong, smart and bold teams of girls selected from Girls Inc. affiliates in the U.S. and Canada.  Sam's Club is the sponsor of the camp.

Girls Making the Rounds

Summer was off to a great start for 25 North Port girls that participated in our 5th annual Making Rounds Healthcare Career Camps.  Girls spent a week connecting their personal skills with career choices.  Girls interviewed women (and a few men) working in the health field, including an EMT, paramedic, dietician, phlebotomist, pharmacist, respiratory therapist, radiology technologist, surgical technologist, histologist, physicians and registered nurses in many specialties.  Girls also identified their own personal interests, strengths and skills, and matched them to the over 300 options available in the healthcare industry.   Englewood Community Hospital took the girls behind the scenes through many of the departments.  At Sarasota making roundsMemorial Hospital, girls were able to work hands-on with the patient simulators.  North Port Fire Department explained the equipment used by EMTs and paramedics when responding to a call.   While at the Florida Blood Centers, girls learned how the blood center has helped many children and teens their community and how donating blood can improve the health of the men in their lives. Participant comments included "I had a great experience" and "I have a big interest in health careers I didn't know about before."  Our special thanks to Gulfcoast South AHEC for once again sponsoring this year's camps.
