The Need is Great-Now

21 girls are currently waiting for the possibility to go to summer camp at Girls Inc. It costs $1,000 to send a girl to summer camp for 10 weeks of award-winning programs. Over the summer, the girls will be going through our healthy body and strong mind curriculum. Donate today to make sure a girl is in a safe and inspiring environment.

More than 900 guests attended the 23rd annual Celebration Luncheon, presented by PNC Wealth Management on March 23 at the Ritz Carlton.  This was the largest Celebration Luncheon ever - and the largest event hosted by the Ritz. cl logo We applaud the great leadership of our co-chairs Georgina Clamage and her daughters Mary Pat Radford and Beth Bobb.

This year, Girls Inc. honored Teri Hansen of the Gulf Coast Community Foundation and Molly Jackson of New Balance Sarasota with our "She Knows Where She's Going" awards.  Jean Cooper was honored with the "Donna Brace Ogilvie Visionary Award" and Jillian Nixon was named "2011 Girl of the Year."  There was not a dry eye in the room when Jillian's aunt shared the impact of Girls Inc. on her niece.  As the Honorable Donna Padar Berlin wrote to executive director Stephania Feltz: "Every time I attend a Girls Inc. event, I am personally inspired and re-energized. Thank you."

The theme of the 2011 Celebration Luncheon was cl2011

"Innovation Nation" and Mitch Leon extended an invitation to the guests to support the STEM (science, technology and math) program at Girls Inc.   We are pleased to announce that our guests and friends contributed $26,000  which generated a $10,000 gift from an anonymous donor.  Another $2,525 was raised for STEM on the Gulf Coast Gives website, bringing the total raised for STEM to $38,525.  Thank you to all our generous sponsors, our guests and our wonderful donors whose gifts are supporting STEM and other programs this spring and summer at Girls Inc.

Another Great Girls On the Run Season!
gotr2011Girls on the Run had a remarkable season.  Over 60 girls in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade from Sarasota, Venice and North Port participated in the program this spring, learning healthy habits for their body, mind and relationships while training for a 5K.  Over 240 people participated in the graduation event at the New Balance Girls On The Run 5K on Friday night, April 29 at Siesta Key Beach.  Thanks to the coaches and volunteers who worked with the girls throughout the season.  Our gratitude to our national sponsors New Balance, Goody and Secret and our local sponsor New Balance Sarasota/University Park for supporting our girls.  Our thanks also to Coca Cola Bottling, Boar's Head and Whole Foods for providing refreshments for the 5K participants and to Jason Roberts of Envision Sports Media for some incredible shots.  A special thanks to the Manasota Track Club volunteers for charting the course and timing the event.  The final girl to cross the finish line  summarized the season well on the sign she carried that read "You can do lots of hard things."  Visit our Girls on the Run page at www.girlsincsrq.org/programs/girls-on-the-run to learn the many ways you can support these amazing girls.

Alumni News-Where are they now....alumni

Ann Spinner Allen, an only child, spent ten happy years as a Girls Inc. girl, starting at age 6.  Her single mom signed her up so she could make friends and have a safe place to go after school.  After leaving Girls Inc., Ann volunteered as a counselor right through her junior year in high school.  The wonderful staff of the Girls Inc. Educational Talent Search program helped her navigate the college application and financial aid process, and she was off to an Orlando community college and then the University of Central Florida.  With an academic focus in marketing and communications, Ann's first job was with Track Shack, which organizes competitive runs around the country.  A half marathoner herself, Ann volunteers with Girls on the Run in Orlando.  Now, at age 30, Ann is the Events Coordinator for her alma mater and continues to be best friends with a girl she met at Girls Inc. when she was 7.  Ann told us, "I wouldn't be where I am today without Girls Inc."  Ann recently added another Girls Inc. title to her resume - DONOR.  Thank you, Ann, for giving back in so many ways!

Girls Get the Message

Girls Get The Message was a great event.  On Saturday, May 7 girls and their mothers attended various media workshops.  Through fun, hands-on activities, girls learned about the types and purposes of media, how to analyze the messages about girls and women in the media, and how to create positive media messages about girls and women.  Mothers learned how to better support their girls through intentional conversations with their daughters.  Parents received a take-home packet with tools to use while consuming media as a family and girls received a copy of the book Your Amazing by Clare Mysko.  During lunch girls and moms got to hear from Elyse Neiman, Supervising Producer of MTV's MADE, about her work, challenges and accomplishments in changing the messages from inside the industry.  If you would like to host a media literacy workshop for your school or group, contact Dawn Wiley at dawn@girlsincsrq.org.

Healthy Body, Strong Mind

Summer 2011 is here and the girls are ready to get tuned up through the healthy body, strong mind curriculum at Girls Inc.  Each week girls will learn about healthy eating habits from community partners like Whole Foods Market and the chefs from the Ritz- Carlton, Sarasota .  Keiser College culinary instructors will be visiting the girls to teach them about healthy snacks and preparation techniques.  Fitness will also play a role in the girl's daily activities.  Goals like being able to run/walk a mile, correcting posture to optomize body energy and exploring a wide variety of fitness techniques so each girl can discover a fitness program that works for them and they enjoy.  A Girls Inc. Olympics is also on the calendar.  Mental conditioning is a part of both curriculums, including stress management and developing a healthy body image through Girls Inc...redible...Inner Beauty Fashion Show.

The goal is not to create "supergirls" but rather to create AMAZING girls inside and out.
