Girls Inc. on the move
by Dawn Wiley, Outreach Coordinator
making roundsDuring the first week of summer a dozen middle school girls in North Port participated in Girls Incorporated's  4th annual Making Rounds Healthcare Career Camp.   The  girls spent the week exploring options in the medical field.  Career planning activities helped the girls learn their strengths, talents, interests and values and the medical careers that would be good matches for them.  The girls explored salaries, education, and scholarship opportunities for over 100 medical occupations.  The girls interviewed women in different healthcare careers and learned first-hand what it's like to be a medical professional.  Field trips included behind-the-scenes visits to Englewood Community Hospital, North Port Fire Station #82, Florida Blood Center and locally and nationally-owned pharmacies in North Port.  Making Rounds was sponsored by Gulfcoast South AHEC with additional support provided by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice and Sarasota County Government.
Girls Take  Action Against Bullies!!
by Marisa Monroe, Program Director
This summer's center wide curriculum emphasis is Bully Prevention & Intervention.  Using the Steps to Respect Curriculum, girls of all ages are learning to be proactive in their communities to stamp out bullying by gaining tools to identify and report bullying and harassment in their school, neighborhood  and anywhere girls may feel uncomfortable.
The program addresses factors that cause others to bully at the school, staff, peer-group, individual- child and family levels.  We are thrilled to partner with Child Protection Center to enrich this already phenomena program with even more interactive girl and family activities.
