Growing Great Girls
by Marisa Monroe, Director of Programs Project BOLD! Our current curriculum emphasis is a National Girls Inc violence prevention and self defense program called Project BOLD. In this program, girls learn to lead safer lives by developing refusal and avoidance skills and strategies to resist unsafe situations as well as physical techniques to protect themselves against harmful threats. Girls also learn how to seek out and talk to caring adults about personal violence and to advocate against gender-specific violence issues. Girls explore such topics twice a week in developmentally appropriate groups. We were thrilled to enrich this already outstanding program by partnering with SPARCC and Child Protection Center to address a variety of personal safety issues. |
Girls Inc. reaches the family
by Dawn Wiley, Outreach Coordinator On January 26, 48 families from the after-school and Family Literacy programs participated in the CYD Family Dinner Night. After a delicious dinner of pasta and meatballs, salad, fruit and yummy desserts, children and their families enjoyed a myriad of activities together. These included art projects depicting the family's strengths and character, exploding volcanoes and other science experiments, board and card games that build math skills, and various sports and fitness activities that contribute to healthy lifestyles. Comment from girls included "it was great" and "best time I ever had." Parents found it "great fun for the whole family" and requested "please do it again." CYD Family Dinner Night is part of Girls Inc.'s Family Strengthening series. |
Girls Inc. on the move
by Dawn Wiley, Outreach Coordinator
On January 27th, 28 freshman and sophomore girls participated in Girls Inc. Project Bold workshop at North Port High School. Girls learned methods for avoiding dangerous situations, non-physical self defense techniques and practiced physical moves used to escape an attacker. The workshop was so popular, 15 girls were put on the wait list for the next one later this spring. The Project Bold workshops will be held in five public high schools in Sarasota County this spring. The workshops are a partnership with the Sarasota County School District's Safe and Drug Free Schools and funding is provided by The Carlie Brucia Memorial Fund.

Dream Harbor News by Donna Kmetz, Director of MicroSociety JILL PROJECT WINS AWARD: On January 14th at a celebration in Tampa, Girls Inc. was recognized with the 2009 WEDU "Be More Brilliant" Innovation Award for the MicroSociety Jill Project. Accepting the award with Stephania was Taylor DeStasio, one of our 11 year old students who became the spokesperson for the Jill Project last year when she served as an elected official in the Dream Harbor Government Center. Once Taylor learned of the deplorable conditions affecting girls in Africa and the horrendous conditions under which they collect water for their families each day, she took a leadership role in rallying her classmates to get involved. Sharing that most girls their age do not attend school because it is the female's role to collect the water, Taylor told of the physical damage done to a young girl's body from carrying the heavy buckets of water and of the danger and violence faced during these day long treks. The girls felt an emotional connection and sadness about the terrible conditions for their "sisters" in Africa, evoking a desire to make a difference in the lives of these girls they had never met. The girls raised over $5,000 in Dream dollars during Market Days which was matched with real currency by private donors and a $2,500 grant resulting in 3 wells being built in villages in Sierra Leone, Africa. Don't miss the televised award ceremony airing February 25th on WEDU. JOB TRANSFERS: Late December and January brought the opportunity for the citizens of Dream Harbor to apply for new jobs. About 65 girls decided they were interested in pursuing employment in a new venture or agency and submitted paperwork requesting a job transfer. Job applications and evaluations were completed while managers set up interviews to determine the best candidate to fill the vacancies. The girls learned valuable lessons about the importance of follow through and making a positive first impression when a missed appointment for an interview meant that another girl got the job they wanted. Additionally, the Post Office services merged with the Dream Harbor Banking Center and a new Sports venture was launched that created instant buzz and a long line of applicants! ELECTED OFFICIALS: On January 19th, seven of the Dream Harbor Elected Officials attended the Sarasota City Commission meeting, receiving certificates of recognition from Mayor Clapp and learning how the city conducts business. Kiana Brown, the Mayor of Dream Harbor sat on the dais between Mayor Clapp and Vice Mayor Kirschner announcing the speakers on a few of the issues up for discussion. Best of all, the audience learned all about Girls Inc.'s MicroSociety program and watched our girls shine with self-confidence as they introduced themselves and their position in the government. Several parents and grandparents came to support their daughters as they participated in this once in a lifetime experience. |
Thank you to Carol Noah and Brian Smith of Sun Trust who are implementing the FDIC Money Smart financial education program at Girls Inc. Twice a month girls and their parents are gathering to develop financial skills. The first workshop premiered on January 13. "Bank On It" topics included the types of financial institutions, why people use them, the fundamentals of using bank accounts, banking services and bank personnel. The second workshop, "Check It Out," saw an increase in attendance and covered how checking accounts work, what fees they charge, how to open an account, and how to maintain it. Money Smart consists of eight modules which will continue throughout the spring.
