Growing Great Girls Girls Inc. Focuses on the Family At Girls Inc, we believe in the importance of family in a girl's life. This year, we are proud to host a variety of family activities, from parenting classes to family fun time. Through funding from Sarasota Wine fest and the Annie E. Casey Foundation, we are able to offer these high quality programs to families free of charge. We have also created a new requirement that all families receiving any amount of scholarship attend at least one family event each month. So far we have offered the first two sessions of a 4-part workshop titled "How to Talk so Your Girl Will Listen and Listen so Your Girl Will Talk", a Family Dinner Night and Money Talks, a National Girls Inc program that teaches girls and their mothers or positive female role models about financial independence. To enrich the experience we also offer delicious meals and free childcare. The response has been astounding! We are thrilled to continue our Focus on the Family Program through the school year.

Girls On the Move
by Dawn Wiley, Outreach Coordinator As our fiscal year closed September 30, what a great year we've had in Outreach. Over 1,600 girls participated in 11 Girls Inc. programs throughout Sarasota County including North Port, Venice, Englewood, Laurel, Nokomis and Sarasota. Girls were served at 27 locations including community centers, schools during and after school hours, youth organizations and churches. We also led activities at 25 community events. And it's more than numbers - amazing things are happening in the lives of these girls. Kindergarteners learned about their body systems, surgery and medical careers such as anesthesiologist (and yes, they can even say the word.) Third grade girls completed their first 5K run. Sixth graders improved their relationships with peers, grades and attendance. Seniors got back on track, graduated and received scholarships. A special thanks to Melissa Callahan, Whitney Bartlett and Bonnie Kritzmacher, our part-time Outreach Instructors, for all of the great work they do. And thanks to each of you for your support in making so many girls strong, smart and bold. |
She's On the Money! On October 9, eleven girls age 10-14 and eight adults from the Girls Inc. after school program and Big Brothers Big Sisters spent their Friday night participating in the Girls Inc. Money Talks Family Financial Literacy Workshopsm. Through hands-on activities, the girls learned about making wise shopping decisions, identified the messages they receive about money and developed a vision for their future. Adults consisting of mothers, grandmothers, aunts and mentors identified the messages they received about money when they were younger and how to be intentional in teaching their girl financial skills. Together the girls and adults compared their money messages, learned about simple and compound interest and developed a grown up budget for an independent woman. Improving communication between girls and an influential adult is a major component of the workshop. Funding for Money Talks was provided by National Girls Incorporated and the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Dream Harbor News October's focus was all about getting the Dream Harbor Government Center up and running. Girls as young as 9 years old were eligible to run for elected office. They learned about the role of the Mayor, Vice Mayor, Treasurer, Secretary and Historian. After completing the "Intent to Run for Office" form, the girls who were interested attended an informational meeting to understand the requirements for eligibility and expectations. Each girl was responsible for completing an application form, obtaining a reference from a teacher at school and a parent or friend and providing us with a copy of her report card. Girls had to have an average grade of at least a "B" with satisfactory citizenship grades and permission from their parents to run for office. After distributing the application packets and setting a deadline for submission, the field was narrowed down to 8 girls. To create the tie-in with the real world model of government, we invited former Senator Lisa Carlton and Vice Mayor Kelly Kirschner to talk to the girls about key components of running a campaign and serving as an elected official. Ms. Carlton's tips included: ˇ Run for office to help others - not yourself! ˇ Tell others how you are going to help them and be a role model. ˇ Eliminate the phrase, "I promise to..." and substitute, "I will work hard to..." ˇ If you get nervous during your campaign speech, take a deep breath to get the jitters out, pause and speak slowly. ˇ It is equally important how you react to a "win" as how you react to a "loss". Vice Mayor Kirschner shared his now famous "popcorn machine" story about running for student government. It underlined the concept that before you make an empty promise to your constituents, you investigate the availability and probability of being able to deliver on it. Mr. Kirschner told the girls that one day he saw a popcorn machine in the janitor's closet. He had an idea that it could be used at the Friday events held at his school. But instead of blurting this out to his schoolmates and promising something he didn't know could really work, he set up a meeting with the principal and was given permission to use the machine. The principal was impressed with his maturity for going directly to the source and Kelly delivered on his idea once he was elected. From that point on, the girls created campaign flyers and posters, held a candidate "Meet & Greet" at Market Day and wrote their speeches. They went on stage and delivered their speeches to an audience of about 100 girls ages 7-14. The girls listened intently, rating the content of the speeches and making notes on who they thought would be the best candidate. Election Day was held on Wednesday, October 21st and with 54% of the vote, Kiana was elected to the office of Mayor. Trinity, Lizzie, Alayna and Dakota all became Vice Mayors. Aysha and Jasmine were elected to the office of Secretary/Historian and Osiris became Dream Harbor's Treasurer. The elected officials are now integrated with the Peacekeepers in the Government Center. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10th where the elected officials, representatives, Chief of Police and Peacekeepers will take their oath of office and officially be recognized as the leadership team of Dream Harbor MicroSociety at Girls Inc. | |
