Greetings!
The Wisconsin Department of Commerce (Commerce) has money available to pay for removal of underground petroleum storage tanks. The tank removal program is available to individuals who do not have the ability to pay for tank removals. Under the program, once eligibility is established, Commerce coordinates and oversees the project and pays the costs for the tank and piping removal, disposal of tank contents, backfilling the excavation, removing the islands, and required soil sampling. When the project is complete, Commerce places a lien against the property for the amount of the project costs. Property owners benefit by reducing risk and making their property more saleable without having to carry the tank removal cost prior to selling. Lenders may wish to encourage clients to take advantage of the tank removal program prior to a foreclosure.
