Greetings!
With ever rising energy prices looming, there is a new energy management standard scheduled for publication. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) announced that they will be releasing the new standard ISO 50001, which has the objective of increasing energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and improving energy performance. The ISO project committee (ISO/PC 242) is expediting publication due to an overwhelming amount of support from the over forty ISO member countries involved in the development of ISO 50001. Strong support for this standard is reported to be due to the approach taken in outlining energy consumption techniques for cost conscious industrial and commercial facilities. ISO 50001 will be compatible with ISO’s quality management standard (ISO 9001) and environmental management standard (ISO 14001). It is expected to include energy management best practices, standards for measuring/documenting energy intensity, and recommendations for more efficient use of energy-consuming equipment. The new ISO 50001 International Standard for energy management is anticipated to arrive this fall, and will provide a refined and widely accepted approach to energy efficiency concerns. |
