WDNR Expanding the Composting Code to Include Food and Other Organics

compost

The WDNR will be holding a public hearing in Madison, tentatively scheduled for December the 13th, regarding proposed revisions to the composting code that could affect commercial and municipal landfill / composting facilities.

So what’s new? The WDNR is proposing to expand the composting rule to add a category called “source-separated compostables” including the composting of food and other organics. In addition, the proposed rule includes:

  • Clarification of the quality of materials for exemption
  • New monitoring record keeping and reporting requirements
  • Compost quality standards, and a new compost classification “Class A” which aids in the marketing of the material but includes extensive operational and testing requirements

We are watching this very closely in order to stay informed on the issue. If you have questions or would like more information, give us a call at 608.224.2830.
