BT Squared

Cheese for Remediation, NO WHEY!

Greetings!

BT Squared never shies away from a challenge. We are always looking for innovative solutions to solve complex environmental problems. Currently we are conducting a pilot study to clean up groundwater contamination using cheese whey.

Injecting whey into the ground assists in groundwater cleanup by feeding the naturally occurring bacteria that help break down the contaminants. Our early results indicate that this method is effective in cleaning up contamination from chemicals like those often found at former dry cleaners and industrial facilities.

Cheese whey based remediation lowers costs in three distinct ways:

  • By treating the contaminants in the ground, it reduces waste disposal costs.
  • There is no mechanical system to maintain.
  • Whey is a low cost additive – sometimes it’s free!

We anticipate the pilot study to be complete by December 2010. Based upon its success we see a lot more whey in our future remediation projects.
