Parts Of Church's Body in Trouble, Need Help

Saint Joseph BasilicaIn homilies delivered at Masses across the Archdiocese of Edmonton, missionary bishops spoke of the work of Catholic Missions In Canada.

''Parts of the Body of Christ are in trouble and need our help." The Gospel: On The Worth And Dignity Of Human Beings

A profound expression of the love of God for human beings can be found in Pope John Paul II's encyclical letter Redemptory Hominis (The Redeemer of Man), from 1979. After writing about our human need to encounter and experience love in its very deepest sense, the Pope concludes:

"In reality, the name for that deep amazement at man's worth and dignity is the Gospel, that is to say: the Good News. It is also called Christianity. This amazement determines the Church's mission in the world and, perhaps even more so, 'in the modern world.' This amazement, which is also a conviction and a certitude...is closely connected with Christ" (Redemptor Hominis, 10). Read more

An ordinary day in Cole Bay
Father Robert Laroche, O.M.I., wearing stole from Catholic Missions In CanadaBy FATHER ROBERT LAROCHE, O.M.I

First Thursday of the month. I arrived in Canoe Lake yesterday where I have a number of missions in the area including Cole Bay and Jans Bay. My alarm goes off at 6:30 a.m., and I quickly shave and shower and begin morning prayer which consists of 30 minutes of quiet prayer and meditation before the Blessed Sacrament followed by the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours. I will be in this area for the next five days visiting a number of people, mainly the sick and the elderly, and meeting people who have experienced difficulties over the past few weeks. Read more
