Two sets of regional community meetings are planned to share your ideas related to School Reports and the development of the Transition Plan for the second year of the New Student Assignment Plan.

Please attend the Nov. 9 State of the District event
Please attend the State of the District event Nov. 9, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Mercer Middle School. I will share data and information about successes, ongoing challenges and our next steps.

Superintendent Maria L. Goodloe-Johnson, Ph.D., will share data and information related to progress, successes and persistent challenges at a Nov. 9 State of the District address.

Families invited to comment on Student Assignment transition plan
Seattle Public Schools is seeking input from families, staff and community members this month to help shape the New Student Assignment Transition Plan. Regional meetings are scheduled Nov. 8-22 in the District's five regions. Read more.

School Reports to be issued Nov. 9; community meetings set
School Reports will be released Nov. 9 and kick off an ongoing community conversation about what needs to be done to make our schools better. Read more.

School Board pledges to work on State Audit findings
The Seattle School Board passed a resolution Oct. 20 specifying corrective actions to address concerns raised in recent audits from the State Auditor's Office. Members pledged to continue working and improving the operation and oversight of the District's systems and business processes. Read more.

District receives $4.6M  in energy-efficiency improvement grants
Seattle Public Schools received $4.6 million in energy-efficiency improvement grants that will help fund 10 energy-efficiency projects at 22 Seattle schools. Read more.

Two videos produced by former Whitman Middle School students have been selected to screen at the 34th Annual Young People's Film & Video Festival on Nov. 7 at the Portland Art Museum's Whitsell Auditorium in Oregon. Read more.

Kelly AramakiJohn Stanford International School principal wins prestigious national award, $25,000 cash prize
Kelly Aramaki, principal at John Stanford International School, was awarded the prestigious 2010  Milken Educator Award. Aramaki received the award during a surprise ceremony at a school assembly.
He will be presented with a $25,000 cash prize at the annual Milken Family Foundation National Education Conference, an all-expenses-paid professional development conference held in Los Angeles in April. Read more.

West Woodland teachers named MOHAI Educator of the Year
The West Woodland Elementary third-grade team of Lisa Stroud, Sara Williams and Margaret Lang will be honored with the MOHAI Educator of the Year award at a Nov. 5 ceremony. Read more.

Golden Apple Award for excellence in education
Pat Bliquez, a teacher/librarian at Roxhill Elementary School, was honored with the Golden Apple Award. The award is given to an educator who makes a positive difference for public school students. Read more.


Garfield, Roosevelt band directors receive music award
Clarence Acox, jazz band director at Garfield High School, and Scott Brown, director of bands at Roosevelt High School, were honored this month with the Seattle City of Music Award. Read more.

with Pacific Northwest Ballet on Nov. 13

More than 250 Seattle Public Schools students will perform on stage at McCaw Hall Nov. 13 as part of the Discover Dance program led by Pacific Northwest Ballet. The performance will be the culmination of an artist-in-residence partnership with three schools - Arbor Heights Elementary, Broadview-Thomson K-8 and Highland Park Elementary. Also featured in the performance will be middle school student musicians from Broadview-Thomson. Read more.

John Muir receives $15,000 grant to fund field trips
John Muir Elementary received a check for $15,000 from the Sierra Club to fund field trips that connect the science, social studies and art curricula with local natural environments. Read more.
