Creating Respectful and Effective Learning Environments

As teachers and families everywhere know, spring weather can bring additional challenges to keep our students focused. SPS offers many programs to support pro-social behavior, including Second Step, Steps to Respect, and Olweus.

I want to assure you that SPS takes bullying behavior seriously. If your child is experiencing bullying behaviors at school, here are actions you should take:

1.      Promptly bring the behaviors to the attention of your child's teacher or counselor. The more information you can provide to the teacher or counselor, such as the name of the other student or student(s), the date the behaviors took place, and the location, the better.

2.      If bullying behavior continues, promptly bring the behaviors to the principal's attention. This may include asking that a Student Intervention Team meeting be called for your child.

3.      If bullying behavior continues, you may file an informal or formal complaint with your school's principal. Click here for more info.

Families may also call the safe schools hotline, at any time, at (206) 252-0510.

Thank you for working with Seattle Public Schools to address bullying behaviors that take place at school.  As a team, of school professionals, parents, and students we can work to reduce and eliminate such behaviors at school.

Sincerely,
