Patterson is named ASAE Fellow One of only five association executives to be honored in 2010
Wisconsin Society of Association Executives (WSAE) Executive Director Lynda J. Patterson, MS, CAE, has been named a 2010 Fellow to the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and The Center for Association Leadership. Patterson is one of only five association executives nationwide to be honored in 2010.
"Fellows are identified by their demonstration of continual leadership, emotional intelligence and visionary and strategic thinking, as well as having earned certification in our industry. The selection committee agrees that these new Fellows exemplify these attributes," said R. Norris Orms, FACHE, CAE, chair of ASAE and The Center's Fellows Selection Committee.
Patterson is the fifth WSAE member to be acknowledged as an ASAE Fellow.
"The ASAE Fellows Selection Committee chose Lynda because of her experience and expertise in the association community, her perspective and vision for the future of associations, and her current and past volunteer leadership. This selection speaks very highly of Lynda and her leadership of WSAE," said WSAE President Daniel C. Borschke, CAE.
In addition to her role with WSAE, Patterson is owner of a full service association management company, president of the Control System Integrators Association, and strategy/leadership consultant for the Americas Committee on Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis.
Patterson is one of 220 association professionals who have received the Fellows designation since the program's inception in 1986. Serving as role models and ambassadors for the association community, Fellows seek out opportunities to serve on boards and committees and serve as speakers, authors, reviewers and mentors.
The Fellows selection process includes nomination by a peer; an in-depth application describing the individual's innovation, leadership and commitment to the profession; an interview with a member of the selection committee; and ultimately selection from among a group of highly-qualified candidates. This year the Fellow selection committee had the privilege of reviewing more than 25 association industry representatives.

WSAE reaches out to area students Education meets real world experience at Country Springs Hotel
In preparation for their final project planning and coordination assessment project, 17 Administrative Professional students from Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) were treated to a "behind the scenes" tour of the Country Springs Hotel in Waukesha on April 5. WSAE membership co-chairs Tera Sagen, Country Spring's group sales manager and Denise Rockhill, NFPA's communications and meetings manager were on hand to offer insight into the world of meeting planning - sharing their experiences from both the hotel and association client's perspective. The lively two-hour presentation by Sagen and Rockhill stressed the importance of working together to build a successful conference program by meeting the attendees' needs through creating an enjoyable meeting experience. Students were given the opportunity to view meeting rooms and ask questions regarding room set-up, day-to-day hotel operations, reservations and cut-off dates, food and beverage, audio visual and security. Students learned to be aware of "other" fees such as service fees, sales tax, parking and resort fees. Sagen stressed the importance of asking questions during the initial planning stages in order to ensure that the hotel meets the group's needs. Rockhill added that contract negotiation was a valuable skill to learn and that "everything is negotiable" when entering the contract phase of the meeting planning process. Rockhill pointed out the importance of cut-off dates, guarantees, and attrition clauses and how they help to solidify a successful event. Handouts included a sample meeting room summary from Sagen and a project list that Rockhill uses to coordinate the program details. Students will use both of these documents to complete their final assessment project. Throughout the presentation the value of belonging to a professional association such as WSAE was emphasized as a way to learn - through educational sessions and networking opportunities - more about careers in the hospitality and association industries. Getting students more actively involved with WSAE is one of the WSAE Membership Committee's goals for 2010. Students are our future workforce and inviting them to come to an educational meeting and/or getting them actively involved in the industry will ensure the continued success of the association. If you would like to learn about this initiative, please contact Tera Sagen at teras@countryspringshotel.com or Denise Rockhill at drockhill@nfpa.com. |
Conversations from WSAE's Connected Community
I was approached by an exective recruiter to send our members an email with a job description. The recruiter will also be paying for an employment ad to be posted on our website. What would you charge for this email to membership in addition to the cost of the employment ad? Also, does anyone have a policy for the use of the membership list for marketing etc?
Event sponsors: What would it take (product feature, service, a key metric) for you to be able to justify spending more money to be a sponsor on the events social network?
