Executive Director
Chuck DavisRemembering Chuck Davis
Davis was long-time VISIT Milwaukee sales director

The city of Milwaukee lost one of its best ambassadors, and VISIT Milwaukee one of its finest representatives, when longtime associate Charles S. "Chuck" Davis died unexpectedly Jan. 9 at the age of 72.

Well known to WSAE members, Chuck provided an ongoing and always friendly relationship with his association clients.  He loved his hometown of Milwaukee and it showed.

Chuck spent 22 years with VISIT Milwaukee as director of sales and then vice president of association sales.  His markets included religious, fraternal, state associations and military accounts, and he was responsible for booking major conventions such as the American Legion, Religious Conference Management Association (RCMA), Women's International Bowling Congress and the National Conference of State Legislators to name a few. Chuck sold Milwaukee as a convention destination until he retired in 2003.

His sales philosophy was simple - it was all about building relationships. And build them he did, meeting and maintaining friends across the nation.

Chuck's "larger than life" personality, infectious positive attitude and warm-hearted enthusiasm for meeting new people will be a lasting memory to all those fortunate enough to have known him.

A Memorial Service and "Celebration of Life" will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Delafield, Wis. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with the service beginning at noon. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Chuck's honor is being established by the family to carry forward his wishes.
Illinois Society of Association Executives
Files Suit Against State

Seeks to halt lobbying registration fee

In late December, the Illinois Society of Association Executives (ISAE) filed a lawsuit to stop the State of Illinois from enforcing a portion of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act that focuses on lobbyists at the Statehouse. The suit is the first legal action ever taken by ISAE.

A piece of that new law would require all lobbyists in Springfield to pay a $1,000 registration fee.

The association's Pamela Tolson said the fee starts at $1,000 per organization, and then grows with each lobbyist. Tolson said many nonprofits soon will find themselves paying thousands of dollars in fees, regardless of what they are doing in Springfield. Read more.
InnovationJoin WSAE's Innovation Task Force
First meeting Jan. 22 in Milwaukee

WSAE's Innovation Task Force is a group of association CEOs and other WSAE members committed to fostering cultures of innovation in their organizations. Prior to each meeting the group will circulate and participants will be asked to review information on the innovative practices of a specific organization. Case studies from the for-profit as well as the non-profit and association worlds will be featured. Participants will discuss:

- Principles of innovation successfully employed by the organization profiled.
- Strategies for applying those principles to the association environment in general.
- Actions for individual participants to take in applying those principles in their organizations.

Future meetings will follow a similar agenda, but each will start by asking participants who made a commitment to action at a previous meeting to share their real experiences in implementing those actions in their organizations.

Using Social  Media for Conferences

In a survey of association executives and consultants, Omnipress set out to discover how associations view social media networks for their events.

More than 325 people responded to the survey answering questions about present social network use, the benefits of creating a social network for a conference, and the use of technology at conferences. Read the full report.

The benefits of implementing community-based progams

Associations provide a unique professional community for their members, but many of them want to make a difference in the communities where they're based, as well. When members work together to meet a local need, they can strengthen bonds within the association as well as give back to those in need nearby. And pulling off successful charitable programs can do wonders for an association, raising its profile in the community, uniting members with a common goal and involving members who are usually on the sidelines. Read more from Association News.
Association Technology Future Report

Association leaders across North America and around the world are talking about social technologies and the impact of these tools on the future of their organizations. It is critical for leaders in the community to deepen their understanding of how and why their colleagues in other associations are using social technologies.

With this goal in mind, the Association Social Technologies Survey was conducted by Principled Innovation, in partnership with Omnipress to capture information from more than 280 associations on: how they have applied social tools, how they have adopted social technologies, why they are using social technologies, and who within the association heads up social technology efforts. See the full report.
elevator speechCreate an Elevator Speech
A concise, easily articulated description of your organization
by Bob Harris, CAE

Developing an elevator speech drives an organization to consider the best way to communicate key information. In a minute or two you want to introduce yourself, describe the organization and grab the attention of the listener.
The term comes from the need to communicate a message in the time it takes to ride an elevator. Read more.
