The Ruby Pendergrass Cornwell Endowment
Ruby Cornwell
1902-2005

As an African American women living in the 1960's, Ruby experienced untold prejudice and injustice, and like many, she was determined to do something about it. Her 1963 arrest for protesting the segregated dining room at the Fort Sumter Hotel was just one instance of Ms. Cornwell making personal sacrifices to fight inequality during her more than 100 year life.

As a life long lover and patron of the arts, Ruby loved to sing. She performed in operas and benefit concerts, and was instrumental in the creation of the Spoleto Festival USA, the African-American Arts Festival and also served on the board of the Gibbes Museum of Art.

The Ruby Pendergrass Cornwell Endowment which was established by the LINKS of Charleston, and substantially increased by a bequest in Ruby's will, helps foster, improve, and sustain arts in the Charleston Area.
