Love Begets Success

A Home Visitor works with a mother and her daugher.

Miss Ruby's Kids started in Georgetown County in 2003 by serving five families.  Founded by Jo Fortuna and Betsy Marlow, the program enlists Home Visitors to work with at-risk 2-and 3-year-old children and their parents to build a strong educational background, ensuring school-readiness in the children.  The Home Visitors use carefully chosen books and toys to model literacy and parenting skills during structured "play" sessions.

The children typically score around the 25th percentile on a language test before the home visitation program and around the 70th percentile after completion. After completion of the two-year home visitation program, the children are paired with volunteer mentors who inspire and enrich them; ideally the mentors will continue to support their mentees until the day they graduate from high school. The Miss Ruby's Kids mentoring program has grown from a pilot serving 13 children in one elementary school in January 2009 to a thriving operation serving 47 children in seven schools. When paired with people who care, every child can succeed at anything!

The Year-end Nonprofit Survey is in

According to the year-end survey given by the Nonprofit Research Collaborative, only 52 of the 1,845 responding organizations reached their 2010 fundraising goals. The survey concentrated on two major percentages--organizations that reached their fundraising goals and organizations that raised more funds in 2010 than the previous year.

To read about how the nonprofit sector fared in 2010, read the entire survey.
