Lady Gaga missed the bus By Meg Goforth-Ward
Have you seen those
billboards showing Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks as 10 year-old members of
the Boys & Girls Club? (Lady Gaga must have missed the bus.) They really are a great resource for helping
kids ages 6 to 18 grow into productive, caring, responsible citizens. Beaufort's
program is primo, and Charleston's
is catching up fast, with both of them helping hundreds of children every
day. One of the Boys & Girls Clubs'
programs, Project Learn, is based on the premise (maybe obvious) that children
do much better in school when they spend their free time after school engaged
in fun educational activities. Boys & Girls Clubs offer help with homework,
writing activities, reading for fun, tutoring, the ability to help others,
discussions with adults, and games like Scrabble that help children's cognitive
skills develop. Project Learn has been proven to improve the youths'
performance in school and out of school. www.bgclubta.org

Jasper).

Postcard from Maggie by Margaret Mullis

A guiding principle of SC Strong is to learn to care for
someone other than one's self. While
that may seem like a basic life lesson,
the men (and soon women) living,
learning and working in this minimum 2-year residential program are ex-convicts
and formerly homeless substance abusers who are learning to re-educate their
way of thinking. Upon graduation, residents will have gained at least a high school
diploma and training in construction,
catering, landscaping or furniture restoration. Additionally,
social survival skills necessary to live
successfully in mainstream society are taught through the program's solid
family value system. As someone aptly summed up,
SC Strong is a safe place to practice being a better person.
