SM 101: 4 Reasons Social Media is a Must for Your Business, 5 Places To Start

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard of social media, you've seen "Follow us on Twitter" everywhere and you've almost definitely joined Facebook yourself. Just in case you're not convinced of the seismic shift in marketing and communications currently underway, take a few minutes to watch this video, from Socialnomics author Erik Qualman, and then come back to join us, please: Social Media Revolution

By the way, the video, only a few months old, as great as it is, already has some outdated stats. If Facebook were a country, for instance, it would now be the 3rd largest in the world, not the 4th as the video suggests. So now, you know how big social media is, but what can social media do for your business? Does it really matter to your bottom line that so many people are using social networks to connect and share? Here are 4 reasons it does matter, and 5 key places to start your business's presence.

American Idol Goes More Social

Since its debut 8 years ago, American Idol has arguably been one of the most interactive shows on television. This season, Fox is taking it to the next level. Host Ryan Seacrest announced on Twitter last week that all of the top 24 contestants will have individual Fan Pages on Facebook, Twitter streams, and MySpace profiles. For more details, including links to all of the Top 24's Facebook Fan Pages, read our article here.

10 Olympians to Follow On Twitter

Olympics

Vancouver has been hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics and the excitement is well underway. We're all waiting to see more special moments that will separate these Games from all the others. If you don't have time to follow the Olympians' moments on the slopes or on the rink, this year, you can follow them on Twitter! Here is our list of 10 athletes to follow throughout their Olympic journeys. For a full list of verified athletes tweeting, click here!

3 Reasons the Future of Your Nonprofit Depends On Social Media

Nonprofits have been hit hard by the recession. Now many nonprofits also face the typical "donor fatigue" fundraising challenges that follow any major natural disaster such as the recent earthquakes in Haiti. All of the traditional funding streams have been hurt, and nonprofits, by and large, keep plugging along - doing more with less, to hang on till better times when they can again focus on their mission with vigor. It's hard when you are short-staffed and under-funded to consider jumping into anything new, but for nonprofits your very survival depends upon committing to building and maintaining a strong social media presence. Here's why.

6 Companies Setting the Standard for Great Customer Service on Twitter

The connectivity of social media has opened the door for companies in their efforts to engage their customers, solve their problems and build overall brand favorability. Aside from reaching fans of your brand, you can use the micro-blogging site to better serve them and improve your customer relations. The benefits of using Twitter as a customer service tool are unparalleled. Through Twitter, you can resolve problems for your customers, portray your brand in a positive way and set the record straight when it's portrayed in a negative way. Arguably the most important benefit is that it can reduce costs since customer service via Twitter likely takes less time and money than a dedicated call center does. Here are examples of 6 companies who are very effective in using Twitter for customer service.

The Early Buzz on Google Buzz

Google Buzz was announced February 9th and has created quite a buzz since then. Google's largest and already most successful entrée into social media has caused an instant stir in the social media world. While there have been major privacy concerns and even a class-action lawsuit filed already, others including Mashable's Ben Parr have argued that Google has completely changed the game. Here's our blog's latest take on the potential of Google Buzz.
