To Get More Men to Volunteer, Colleges Must Make an Extra Effort
By Sara Lipka Chicago March 9, 2010 College
men participate in campus activities at disproportionately low rates,
but deliberate efforts to recruit them can help, according to the
findings of a two-year study of 14 institutions that was presented here
on Tuesday at the annual conference of Naspa-Student Affairs
Administrators in Higher Education. "We didn't want to find out how to force men to volunteer. We wanted
to find out how to get them to willingly volunteer," said Gar E.
Kellom, who led the study and directs the Men's Center for Leadership
and Service at Saint John's University, an all-male institution in
Collegeville, Minn. Student-affairs officers packed a room to hear initial findings from
the study, which was financed by a $600,000 grant from the Lilly
Endowment. A full report, "Engaging College Men: Discovering What Works
and Why," including case studies from each of the 14 campuses, will be
published this summer by Men's Studies Press. Early on, the colleges participating in the study recognized the
benefits of "pied pipers," or peer leaders who could help promote and
run service trips and activities, Mr. Kellom said. That kind of
encouragement tended to increase participation, as did personal
invitations from faculty or staff members, particularly face to face or
by letter, he said. Multiple reminders via e-mail and text message right up to the time
of an event also led to better male turnout, Mr. Kellom said. To
attract students who would be interested in an activity if only they
showed up, he suggested having peers drop by to accompany them to it. But increasing participation goes beyond advertising and recruiting.
"It's how you structure the activities," Mr. Kellom said in an
interview. He recommended that colleges form men's groups to support
students' reflection and incubate their broader engagement. Several
colleges involved in the project focused on religious activities, and
some created men's spirituality groups. Read More..
Charities benefit from Austin execs' love of art
Austin Business Journal - by Christopher Calnan ABJ Staff March
26th-31st
(Pictured: Sloan Foster Vice President, Marketing and Business Develop ment, HBMG, Inc. is one executive selling her work for charity)For Tom Serres, the CEO of online payment processor Piryx Inc., creating art and creating a business are similar - but just dissimilar enough. So Serres produces photograph manipulation artwork as part of his need to innovate while recharging his business batteries. "The idea of creating things is inherently in my blood," he said.
"It's another way for me to relax. It gives me a chance to sit back,
open up my mind and think more broadly." Serres, like many businesspeople, isn't all business. And some apply
the same knack for innovation to both generating revenue streams and
creating art.

Best Practices: The Case of El Paso
TCCTA Blog April 6, 2010 El
Paso Community College has implemented a number of interventions aimed
at boosting student success, most of which focus on two interrelated
goals. The first goal is to help prospective students improve their
readiness for college so that when they do start college at EPCC, they
can avoid enrollment in developmental courses and begin immediately
taking credit-bearing offerings. The second goal is to help entering
EPCC students who are required to take developmental courses to
successfully complete that coursework in a much shorter period of time.
It's
all in a new report: "Collaborating to Create Change: How El Paso
Community College Improved the Readiness of Its Incoming Students
Through Achieving the Dream," by Monica Reid Kerrigan and Doug Slater,
in the March issue of the Achieving the Dream Culture of Evidence Series (New York: Community College Research Center and MDRC). In
collaboration with the University of Texas at El Paso and 12 local
independent school districts in the El Paso area, EPCC developed and
brought to scale an improved process for helping high school students
prepare for entry into college. Typically during their junior and
senior years, El Paso area high school students now participate in what
is known as the "college readiness protocol." Before they graduate from
high school, virtually all students: (1) complete a joint admissions
application to EPCC and UTEP, (2) learn about and prepare for the
ACCUPLACER test, (3) take the ACCUPLACER test, (4) review scores with
counselors, and (5) refresh skills and take the test again if needed.
Some students also (6) enroll in a summer bridge program to strengthen
their basic skills, if necessary. Here's a link with more information and access to a pdf version of the full report from Achieving the Dream.

Panola College
Saturday, April 10, 2010 Panola
College's Student Occupational Therapy Assistant (SOTA) Club is teaming
up with our Occupational Therapy Management course to sponsor a
volleyball game to raise money for ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease. ALS is a
disease that causes the loss of muscle movement control through the
degeneration of brain and spinal cord nerves which eventually spreads
throughout the body. We would like to extend an
invitation to all of you and your campuses to join us in this effort to
benefit members of society suffering from this disease. We are looking
for more teams to sign up. Registration per five person team is $50 or

teams compete until they lose. The grand prize is $500.00, and there

you do not think you would like to participate in playing, there are
other volunteer opportunities such as being a referee, a judge, a line

Using Sustainability to Create New Course Content: A Curriculum Development Institute for Faculty in All Disciplines
May 24, 2010 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT
Sustainability provides educators and trainers with new opportunities to connect their disciplinary subject matter with that of other disciplines. Topics such as scarcity, conflict, democracy, health, human rights, poverty, economic development, social justice, religious beliefs, cultural preservation, food security, energy independence, biodiversity, ethics, ecosystems, corporate social responsibility and many more can be systemically related to each other using sustainability as a unifying theme. Developing such inter and trans-disciplinary linkages is often done best through dialogue with other faculty and experts. This workshop is designed for educators who are looking for new and creative ways to weave environmental sustainability into their curricula or to develop a new course with a sustainability focus. Participants will also work with each other to explore and identify sustainability knowledge and skills as they relate to and across different disciplines. They will also develop student learning outcomes that are important in teaching about sustainability and discuss ways student sustainability learning could be assessed. More information and on-line registration is available at: http://www.vtcampuscompact.org/2010/sustainability_institute.htm
