Service-learning comes to Panola
From the Pony Express
By Lynn Kincheloe
Friday, 22 January 2010 12:01 PM CST
Panol a College is adding service-learning to its curriculum starting in fall 2010. Kira Munoz (pictured), service learning coordinator for Panola College, is
working with several instructors on trial assignments before rolling
the full program out in the fall. Service-learning integrates community service and instruction to
foster educational growth and complete projects in the community.
Instructors can choose how to implement it into their courses, ranging
from traditional assignments to extra credit opportunities.
AmeriCorps, a community service organization, assigned Munoz to work
with Panola College through a Wagner-Peyser grant from the Texas
Governor's office, according to Dr. Barbara Cordell.
"My goal is to have everyone grasp the concept of service-learning
so that we may work together to incorporate it into the curriculum for
next semester." said Munoz, "I have met with a few people that are
going to try service-learning assignments out this semester, and I
encourage everyone to at least consider it."
Service-learning benefits the students by engaging them in the
learning process, making them aware of the impact of civil service, and
classroom material comes to life.

Munoz received her BA in Psychology in 2009 from Alverno College in
Milwaukee, WI. While there she was the director of the Character and
Leadership Development Program and the volunteer coordinator for the
Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. Kira planned the 2009
Wisconsin Private Colleges Initiative for Diversity (WPCID) Conference
and served as chairperson for the conference.

MLK Day an opportunity for community involvement
From Daily Skiff Online By Ashley Lovine
Issue date: 1/15/10 Section: News
Martin Luther King Jr. Day might be a holiday, but some students won't be taking the day off. The university is now participating in the MLK Day of Service, said Melissa Gruver, coordinator for community involvement.
By noon on Monday, student volunteers will be working with community
agencies, such as Neighbor Helping Neighbor, Samaritan House and
Buchner Family Services, Gruver said. Gary Briggs,Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity president, and Brittany
Shamlin, NAACP president for the university's chapter, are leading the
project. Gruver said that various student organizations on campus like Alpha
Phi Omega, the Black Student Association and the Multicultural Greek
Council signed up to participate.
"I'm glad that we are taking advantage of this day to make it more
than just another holiday or another day to sleep in and not go to
class," Shamlin said. "I'm excited that... we've had such an amazing
response to the day, being that it's a new event. We weren't quite sure
how people would respond to it, but it's been great turnout." Shamlin said there were about 55 students registered to participate in MLK Day of Service.
Jamarri Aikins, a senior psychology major, said he heard about the
event through the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and thought he should help
out.
"I think this is a great opportunity for everybody to kind of live
in his shoes and look at some of the things that he did," Aikins said. Adult Degree Completion Contacts
Reports issued in 2008 by the Council for Adult and
Experiential Learning and the National Center for Higher Education Management
Systems revealed that there are over 3.4 million working-age adults in Texas
that have completed some college but do not have a college degree. Finishing up
a college degree can make a huge difference in a person's life. For
example, the lifetime earnings of someone with some college credit but no
degree is a little over $1.5 million dollars while someone with a bachelor's
degree will earn over $2 million during their lifetime.
If you started a college degree but didn't get a chance
to finish it, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board would like you to
consider going back to school and finishing your degree. There are higher
education institutions and programs all over the state interested in
working with students like you. Contact any of the people on the
following list for information and help on finishing your degree.

Site Collects Free Course MaterialTCCTA Blog February 10, 2010 A
new Web site, the Open Educational Resources Center for California,
assembles information on free and open textbooks and other course
materials, all at one location. Though the Web site was designed for
California's community college faculty members, it could be a useful
resource for all two-year college educators wishing to find books and
materials in the public domain. It's a pilot program authorized by a
new state law there. The center was designed to give
California's community college professors and deans "a way to save time
and frustration by pulling together all the information they need if
they want to embrace open textbooks on their campus," said Judy Baker,
director of the center and dean of the college's distance learning
program. The site links to more than 400 open textbooks and peer
reviews. Ms. Baker said the center provided materials as well as
instructions on how to use them. As traffic to the site increases, she
reportedly plans to add discussion forums. Here's the link. The above information was provided by the "Wired Campus" segment of the Chronicle of Higher Education, in an article by Mary Helen Miller (subscription). Early College Works With At-Risk Students
TCCTA Blog February 8, 2010
A
number of community colleges in Texas have programs allowing high
school kids to enroll for college classes before graduating. (This is
not the same thing as dual credit, which is typically offered on high
school campuses.) The idea is to bring these students into a higher
education atmosphere, in part to allow them to avoid the culture shock
that many young people experience when they go to college. Perhaps the
environment also encourages more maturity and focus.
It is
generally reported that early college programs work very well for
students who are already prepared and motivated to do the work. What is
less clear is whether the concept works for individuals in the at-risk
category.
A recent article in the New York Times by Tamar Lewin (registration)
explores this issue, with positive results indicated for students who
need extra help. North Carolina, for instance seems to have found an
approach that works. "Results have been impressive," the article
states. "Not all students at North Carolina's early-college high
schools earn two full years of college credit before they graduate-but
few drop out. In addition, North Carolina's early-college high school
students are getting slightly better grades in their college courses
than their older classmates."
Transportation to campus is an obvious issue. In the NYT piece, the students profiled ride a school bus.
Diana Natalicio, Ph.D. to
serve on Mexico Bicentennial Committee
Diana Natalicio, Ph.D. (pictured), president of The University of Texas at El
Paso, is one of 40 individuals named to the Mexico Bicentennial Committee in
the United States. She was chosen for the appointment by Arturo Sarukhan,
ambassador of Mexico to the United States. Natalicio said UTEP has had a
longstanding relationship with Mexico since its establishment in 1914 as the
Texas State School of Mines and boasts many Mexican alumni and students.
She is part of a list of distinguished members of the committee that will
help celebrate the Mexican history and culture, including New Mexico Gov. Bill
Richardson, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, California State Rep.
Loretta Sanchez and Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Corporation of
New York.
UT DALLAS IS A
NEW MEMBER OF TXCC!!
UT-D School of
Management unveils master's program The University of Texas at Dallas School of Management has unveiled a
master's program designed for individuals piloting business startups and for
those already leading established organizations. The 36 credit-hour Master of
Science in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MSIE) program debuted this spring
semester.
Program Director Dr. Joseph C. Picken (pictured) said the
dual emphasis and a focus on technological innovation differentiates the
UT-Dallas program from the others, noting the school's curriculum "has
always been focused primarily on technology-based entrepreneurship."

Grant Opportunity for Higher Ed service learning: Teaching & service learning with K-12!
The International Center
for Service-Learning in Teacher Education at Duke University is submitting a "National Teacher Education Proposal" to the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and is considering selecting a Texas Teacher Ed Institution
as a possible sub-grantee for the proposal.
The proposal includes a three year grant to a small number of teacher education institutions that are committed to teaching serive-learning pedagogy and building effective service-learning partnerships with one or more K-12 school districts. The grant will also be a collaboration with NCATE (the National Council for Accreditation in Teacher Education) during the three years the project is funded.
Duke is interested in a Texas University that is doing good work in service-learning in teacher education, working with K-12 districts, interested in community impact, and that might be interested in taking part in a National Project with some funding support for three years. The grant amount has not been established since this will depend on the number of subgrantees, but it will likely be between $20,000 -$40,000.
**If your institution meets this criteria and has a strong interest in being a sub-grantee, please let TxCC know by sending an email to patricia@texascampuscompact.org
Platinum Torch
Announces Scholarships for Student Volunteers
Platinum Torch National Service
Honorary, a national non-profit organization that
recognizes high school and college students' community service involvement, announces
the availability of three $500 scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic
year. Platinum Torch is the only national non-profit organization
that honors students solely based on outstanding community service
involvement.
Unlike other scholarships that recognize
students based on academic excellence and athletic achievement, Platinum
Torch awards scholarships to students who perform the most verified community
service hours each academic year.
High school seniors and college
students applying for the scholarships must first register as a member with
Platinum Torch by logging on to the Web site at www.platinumtorch.org.
Verifiable community service hours performed between July 1, 2009 - May 1,
2010 will be applicable to the scholarship application that can be downloaded
from the Web site. All applications must be postmarked by May 8,
2010.
Platinum Torch provides all scholarship
winners and members with an official Community Service Transcript to include
with college admission, scholarship provider, or employment applications.
Depending on the level of service students attain, they will receive a
certificate, and a service level pin or National Fellow honorary plaque.
Platinum Torch chapters are created at
the high school and college levels, allowing members to participate in a new
and dynamic movement to promote the life changing importance of community
service. New high school chapters require a minimum of five members and
college chapters must have at least 10 members. All chapters require a
designated faculty or staff advisor.
We hope you share this information
with your students and find value in developing lifelong patterns of
volunteerism in young leaders.
