News from Executive Director, Patricia Potyka M.A.
Dear
Friends of The Compact,
I
refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless
midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood
can never become a reality.... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional
love will have the final word.
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
Since we recently celebrated his existence with our
national holiday, I thought it appropriate to share with you how TXCC member
campus Collin College celebrated his life.
This past
January 18 -- Martin Luther King Day -- Collin College once again affirmed its
commitment to civic engagement by partnering with the city of Plano to
celebrate Dr. King's dream and passion for peace and understanding with their Keep
The Dream Alive: Celebration Of Dr. King's Vision.
Under President
Cary A. Israel's leadership, Collin College hosted their annual Community
Leadership Breakfast, which included panelists such as Senator Florence
Shapiro, the Mayor of Plano, as well as Plano ISD board members and students,
at the Collin College Spring Creek Campus in Plano. These
participants convened together to share ideas, thoughts and stories as a means
to creating a flow of dialogue and voice concerns, hopes and inspiration.

Collin College
also hosted a Unity Walk for a Day of Nonviolence, which was held
on Saturday, January 16 at the Plano Housing Authority.

These events
were free and open to the community of Collin and more than 405 individuals
participated. We would like to encourage our other TxCC member campuses
to follow the model that Collin College has adopted for their traditional MLK
celebration. Next year, TxCC will be partnering with more member campuses
throughout our state, to encourage this type of civic participation; the
connection a campus has with its community is vital to the ongoing nourishment
of the student experience. A special thank you to TxCC founding board
member President Cary Israel for publicly showing his institutional
commitment to community based service and civic engagement activities.
Collin College
serves more than 46,000 credit and continuing education students annually and
offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The only public college
in the county, Collin College is a partner to business, government and
industry, providing customized training and work force development.

By
Western New York AmeriCorps
This Sunday, Jan 24, ABC will air an extended two-hour episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,
about an extraordinary story of hope from the west side of Buffalo. In
November 2009, the show came to one of the most disadvantaged
neighborhoods in our nation's third poorest city to build a green home

transforming an entire community through service. The volunteers worked
on projects for 164 families- replacing roofs, rebuilding steps,
painting, hanging siding, landscaping and other needed projects for
neighborhood.
This mass volunteer mobilization would not have happened without the
leadership of Western New York (WNY) AmeriCorps, which led volunteer
recruitment and management for the entire project. More than 200 WNY
AmeriCorps members and staff helped the build out and managed
volunteers during the blitz. The blogpost below tells the
behind-the-scenes story of AmeriCorps involvement and the extraordinary
partnerships and compassion that transformed a neighborhood.

Microsoft and the Corporation for National and
Community Service Launch New Initiative to Promote Student Leadership in the
Classroom Six schools
highlight how others can connect service and technology to transform learning.
WASHINGTON - Jan. 25,
2010 - Today, Microsoft Corp. and the Corporation for National and
Community Service announced six schools - from California, Mississippi, New
York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia - selected to participate in
the Service & Technology Academic Resource Team (START). The initiative
recognizes the leadership shown by youth and teachers in schools across America
who are working together in meaningful ways to revitalize learning, schools and
communities through the use of technology.
START redefines the role of the
student in the classroom and creates a new kind of collaboration between
students and teachers through technology-focused service-learning. The goal is
to utilize the technology skills of students to partner with teachers and
determine where technology best fits into the learning environment. The selected
schools will receive grants and serve as national laboratory sites and as
examples of how schools can integrate service-learning and technology into the
classroom. The schools will present their scalable best practices today for
Karen Cator, director of Education Technology for the U.S. Department of
Education.
"At first I wasn't sure how a
project like this could work and how it could improve my students' academic
outcomes. After I stepped back and let my students teach me about technology, I
realized the tremendous benefits of these service-learning projects," said
Linda Clifton, principal at Tupelo Middle School. "Teachers have been amazed at
the things students can do with technology and by integrating students'
expertise in technology into the learning process, you give them the
opportunity to expand their learning opportunities, while creating a
much-needed technology support system for the teachers."
The teachers participating in the
START initiative gain valuable technology and computer skills, while their
students improve their problem-solving, critical-thinking, troubleshooting
and communication skill sets. For example, students
at Tupelo Middle School in Tupelo, Miss., use technology to help draft learning
materials for other students and classes, as well as maintain and service
computers. The teachers depend on these students to do more than just keep
their computers functioning; they also help them prepare instructional
resources in digital formats.
"We must start thinking differently
about traditional teaching and learning models and how we can prepare our
students for the future," said Mary Cullinane, director of innovation for U.S.
Education at Microsoft. "Combining service opportunities with technology needs
in the classroom prepares students with the 21st century skills they need today
and in the future."
"Today's
students use technology throughout their daily lives, and when this knowledge
is shared with teachers in a practical way, it has the potential to enhance
learning experiences and outcomes for both teachers and students," said Nicola
Goren, acting CEO of the Corporation. "By tapping into students' skills and
abilities, we can help improve the quality of our education system and
strengthen students' academic performance."

Deadline Nears for Voter Registration
Texas Secretary of State Esperanza
"Hope" Andrade is reminding Texans that February 1 is the deadline to register
to vote in the 2010 Primary Elections. At stake are all statewide executive
offices (including a hot race for governor) and most seats in the Texas
Legislature.
In many cases, since legislative
districts are drawn to partisan advantage, the primary election March 2 will
determine the de facto
winner in November. With a lower turnout than in the General Election, primaries
are a great opportunity to maximize your influence.
Secretary Andrade says: "Registering
to vote is easy; Texans may find a voter registration application at their
county elections offices, some post offices and libraries, or online at: www.votexas.org," said Andrade.
Individuals may also check online to
determine if they are registered or update their registration information if
they have moved throughout the state. Any changes to a voter's existing registration
should be made by February 1 to be applicable to the Primary Elections this
March.
For more voting information: visit: www.votexas.org or call the Secretary
of State's voter hotline at 1-800-252-VOTE (8683).

UT Developing Plan to Cut $29 Million From Budget
By Ralph K.M. Haurwitz
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
Responding to a directive from state leaders, the University of
Texas is developing a plan to cut 5 percent, or $29 million, from the
state-funded portion of its two-year budget, UT President William
Powers Jr. said Monday.
"It's a sizable amount of money," Powers said at a meeting of the Faculty Council. "This is not good news."
Last
week, Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and House Speaker Joe
Straus instructed state agencies, including higher education
institutions, to submit budget-reduction plans by Feb. 15. Some areas
of the budget, such as Medicaid and foster care, were exempted. The
three officials, all Republicans seeking re-election, stopped short of
asking the agencies to implement the budget cuts. Powers said he
planned to meet later Monday to discuss the matter with UT System
Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa and James Huffines, chairman of the
system's Board of Regents. UT System spokesman Anthony de Bruyn
said: "We understand the economic climate. The system has been a leader
in looking at organizational efficiencies. So we're going to look at
this and work diligently with our campuses on how we navigate this
course right now."
The prospect of a budget reduction comes at a difficult time for the Austin flagship.
Its
overall budget, including legislative appropriations, federal research
grants, tuition, gifts and other items, rose 2.8 percent, to $2.1
billion, for the fiscal year that began Sept. 1. But after covering
higher health insurance charges, increased student financial aid and
other costs, UT had just $6.7 million more than the previous fiscal
year for academic purposes. In recent months, Powers has overseen
an effort to free up millions of dollars for retaining and recruiting
top faculty members. Some staff members have been dismissed, and more
layoffs could be in the works. About 36 percent of faculty members got
raises this year.
Power said it wasn't clear whether the UT
System's 15 campuses might each have to trim 5 percent of the portion
of their budgets funded by general state revenue or whether strategic
reductions were possible, whereby some campuses might make deeper cuts
and others none at all.
"I wish I had more definitive information," he said.
