Texas Campus Compact News
TxCC Notes from Executive Director, Patricia Potyka, M.A.

Happy, merry new decade to all of our Texas Campus Compact friends!

Texas Campus Compact has entered 2010 with fresh optimism and hope for an outstanding merry new decade and we wish the same for you and your colleagues, family, and friends.

January is National Mentoring Month so it seems appropriate to share with you the following PSA, highlighting General Colin Powell:

http://www.real.com/realplayer?src=null&pcode=rn and to tell you a bit about TxCC's mentoring objectives.

We are currently working on several grant proposals that, if awarded, would enable TxCC students to work more closely with the HB400 schools in Texas - the 200 lowest performing high schools in our state; peer to peer mentoring with college students - our best resources - working closely with high school students, in an effort to help close the gaps.

We are also working securing funding for the establishment of the C2 Texas Service Learning Core - consisting of faculty and other community service experts  - who will work directly with college students to bring mentoring and college access to central Texas' lowest performing high school [HB 400 Schools] students.   TxCC hopes that this mentoring initiative will greatly impact college student enrollment and graduation rates; mentoring opportunities for students, to generate interest in teaching professions; minority student readiness in science, technology, engineering, and math; and improve faculty training in service learning.

We are thrilled to inform you that last November's Live. Learn. Serve. event raised more than $20,000; a special thank you to AT&T for coming in as our presenting sponsor.  A special thank you to those of you who traveled far and wide to be with us in Austin - your presence will always be remembered.

Our STEM in Action community impact program model has been a tremendous success.  The grant ended this month and unofficial results indicate a 33% increase in the TAKS test scores.  We would like to extend a special thank you to our partner, Austin Community College - we could not have undertaken such an enormous program without your expertise and talent.

We will also be publishing our second service learning journal so be on the lookout for submission dates and deadlines.

Last October, TxCC began initial conversations with Texas Tech, to bring our members a service learning certification.  To date, there are currently no campuses in Texas that offer a certification in service learning.  We are excited to be part of bringing this important designation to our state and hope that you will find this to be of great value for your students.

This February, we will be hosting a 1-day conference for all of our community service learning directors.  If you would like to be on the host committee for this event, please let me know.  We value our members and your input and suggestions are always welcome.  Please remember, we are here to serve you.

We are pleased to announce the arrival of our new intern, Courtney Medford, a pr / marketing student at St. Edward's University.  Courtney begins her internship Monday and will be managing all of our pr / marketing / communication needs.  Courtney can be reached at:  Courtney@texascampuscompact.org

Texas Campus Compactis establishing a partnership with Washington Campus Compact to expand the Students in Service AmeriCorps program, a part-time AmeriCorps program. Students in Service will 300 college students in Texas to serve their community, learn valuable workforce skills, and earn an education award to help pay their college tuition or loans. If approved the Students in Service program will be offered to 61campuses throughout the state of Texas.

Lynn and I will be traveling to Rice University at the end of this month, as we begin our spring season of member outreach visits.  Please let me know if you would like specialized faculty training at your campus or are in need of resources or assistance in facilitating your service learning councils on your respective campuses.

Additionally, we are expanding our Advisory Council, so please us me know if you have an interest in being part of this integral force for good;   We have assembled 11 of our state's best educators and welcome the opportunity to have you join our efforts.

Wishing you a warm and safe weekend.

Texas Conference for Women helps Americorps VISTA with Personal Development

by Samantha Dominquez girls

This year marks the third year the Women's Fund of El Paso has sponsored the scholarship program, providing $5,000 to cover the cost of sending 10 girls and two chaperones to the conference. The Center for Civic Engagement graciously sponsored Samantha Dominguez, a Texas Campus Compact Americorps VISTA to attend the annual Texas Conference for Women as a chaperone.

She was able to mentor to these 10 young women talking about University ambitions, passions and life goals.  "I was able to really learn about these girls who came from different backgrounds which allowed me to learn about myself and I am very grateful to Texas Campus Compact and the Center for Civic Engagement for this experience," said Dominguez. The conference, which attracts more than 7,500 women from across the state, includes a Young Women's Program - speakers and topics that encourage young women to overcome obstacles and maximize their potential.

Keynote speakers at the 10th annual conference include finance guru Suze Gorman and Latin American author Isabelle Allende and Olympic gymnast, Nastia Liukin. As an Americorps VISTA this opportunity would not have happened and would not have the opportunity to meet young ambitious women in the El Paso bordering community.  "I am going to try really hard to be successful because this was such a great opportunity. The conference inspired me a lot. If all those women can, then I can, too,"said 16 year old Karina Rocha, talking about her trip to the Texas Conference for Women.  Samantha Dominguez is a TxCC VISTA located at TxCC's VISTA  host site at the University of Texas-El Paso.

President Obama Signs National Mentoring Month 2010 Proclamation

The White House

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release
January 04, 2010

Presidential Proclamation - National Mentoring Month
A PROCLAMATION

Every day, mentors in communities across our Nation provide crucial support and guidance to young people. Whether a day is spent helping with homework, playing catch, or just listening, these moments can have an enormous, lasting effect on a child's life. During National Mentoring Month, we recognize those who give generously of themselves by mentoring young Americans.

As tutors, coaches, teachers, volunteers, and friends, mentors commit their time and energy to kids who may otherwise lack a positive, mature influence in their lives. Their impact fulfills critical local needs that often elude public services. Our government can build better schools with more qualified teachers, but a strong role model can motivate students to do their homework. Lawmakers can put more police officers on our streets and ensure our children have access to high-quality health care, but the advice and example of a trusted adult can keep kids out of harm's way. Mentors are building a brighter future for our Nation by helping our children grow into productive, engaged, and responsible adults.

The Future of Higher Ed: An Interview with Pat Callan

Formally, he's Patrick M. Callan, but everyone calls him Pat, whether they are praising him for creating and sustaining the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, or taking his name in vain when "Measuring Up," the report card on higher education that the Center publishes every two years, comes out.
If you watched our documentary, Declining by Degrees, you know what Pat looks like. And you may have heard him on a couple of our podcasts. Now you can read him, in this interview.
Yes, Pat has been around for a while and has served with distinction on the California Higher Education Policy Center, the California Postsecondary Education Commission, the Washington State Council for Postsecondary Education, the Montana Commission on Postsecondary Education and the Education Commission of the States.
He's a force to be reckoned with and shows little sign of slowing down.
