TxCC Notes-From Executive Director, Patricia Paredes |

Dear Valued Members, Educators, and Supporters,
In early June I undertook my first "East Texas Tour" of community
colleges and universities. I was
especially looking forward to the trip because admittedly, I have never spent quality
time in east Texas,
except to visit Stephen F. Austin several months ago. Of course, the drive was even more beautiful
than I remembered. Lynn Prince, our
director of operations and I had the distinct pleasure of first meeting with Dr. Larry Phillips, president of Angelina College and Dr. Patricia
McKenzie, vice president and dean of instruction. Dr. Phillips is a delightful man who has a
strong commitment to service learning so if you are ever in Angelina, take time
to stop by and say hello.
Our second visit
was with Dr. Bill Holda, president of Kilgore
College, Dr. Gerald Stanglin, vice president of instruction and chief
academic officer, Michael Jenkins, vice president of student development, and
Michelle Wilder, English
Department Instructor and Director, Center for Service Learning. Dr. Holda is an amazing man and leader. He reiterated his strong institutional
commitment to service learning by joining The Compact. Dr. Holda also serves as secretary and
treasurer of the Texas Association of Community Colleges and was a great
resource of information to us. We are pleased to announce that Kilgore College is a new member of The Compact.
Lynn
and I had a delightful third meeting
with Drs. Gregory Powell and Lillian Cook, president of Panola College
and vice president of instruction, respectively. I was taken back at the hospitality we were
shown. Situated in the charming town of Carthage, Panola
College boasts a
beautiful campus. We are pleased to announce that Panola College
is a new member of The Compact.
Our
next visit was with Letourneau University, situated in Longview, Texas. Letourneau is a wonderful University, with a wide range of educational opportunities for students. We met with Dr. Wayne Jacobs, dean, school of
education, after a torrential downpour, with wet hair and clothes to boot but
after all we were in the part of Texas
that receives 57 inches of rain a year. I was impressed with Letourneau
immediately but mainly due in part to Lynn
raving about the university; she is currently getting her undergraduate degree
there. Their motto is: faith brings us together and ingenuity sets
us apart.
We were
greeted very warmly and with open arms by the University of Texas
at Tyler team. They
have been valued members of The Compact for quite some time so it was a treat
to meet president, Rodney Mabry and provost and vice president, Dr. Peter
Fos. I was extremely impressed with the
time they so kindly extended to us.
Our
last and final visit was with Tyler Junior College. We had the delightful pleasure of meeting
with president, Dr. Mike Metke and provost, Dr. Homer "Butch" Hayes. No sooner did Dr. Metke mention his recent
trip to Costa Rica - with
students - than I chimed in about my recent trip to Ethiopia. Turns out, Dr. Metke was a Peace Corps volunteer
in Costa Rica and his
colleague, Dr. Hayes was a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia. The four of us talked and
laughed for over an hour about travels around the world and shared experiences.
Dr. Metke even took time to show Lynn
and me some of his photographs from Costa Rica. And, as we departed with many hugs, he gifted
us with beautiful sterling silver key chains with the words "President's List"
on them - which means that Lynn and I are now official 4.0'ers from TJC. We can't wait to return.
We are pleased to announce that Tyler Junior
College is a new member of The Compact.
If you
have some time this summer, I highly recommend you make time to visit East Texas by car.
The scenery is lush and green and the people warm and hospitable. And, take a moment to check out Tyler's Rose
Museum while you're at
it. Or, if you want to wait until fall,
then make plans to attend Tyler's
Rose Festival and then next spring, make plans to attend their Azalea
Festival.
The University
of Texas Health Science Center and Baylor University
are also new members of The Compact.

Sarah Mayer Joins Texas Campus as Director of Communications
|
Service
work has been an integral part of Sarah's life for many years. She has
volunteered at Mobile Loaves and Fishes and the Soup Kitchen in Austin,
as well with the World Changers Organization in Alabama on two
occasions, helping with the restoration of low income housing. Through
Sarah's volunteer efforts, she has witnessed the difference that
individuals can make in the lives of those less fortunate, priding
herself on taking the time to lend a helping hand.
Sarah
is currently attending St. Edward's University in Austin where she is
in the process of completing her B.A. degree in Communications, with an
emphasis on Public Relations,Advertising, and Media Arts.
In her spare time, Sarah takes pleasure participating in the variety of
activities Austin has to offer, including attending art and music
performances like South by Southwest, as well as outdoor activities,
such as running on Town Lake and the greenbelt. Sarah is a native
Texan, having grown up in Dripping Springs just outside of Austin.
We
are pleased to have Sarah interning with Texas Campus Compact this
summer and welcome her as our new Director of Communications.
It is with great personal pleasure that I announce our new colleague as Sarah also happens to be my neighbor.

Dreyfuss promotes a return to civility, civics
| NORFOLK, V a. (AP) - Of all the causes actors have chosen to
champion, Richard Dreyfuss admits his passion lacks, well, a certain
pizazz: Civics.
"Don't call it 'civics' because 'civics' is
easily the most boring word in America," Dreyfuss says. "Call it what
it is: political power." Dreyfuss brings an actor's dramatic
pacing and a historian's licks to his cause, erasing any notion that
this lesson will be boring. He's bombastic, predictably brash and yet
professorial during a 90-minute interview in a bland hotel suite in
this seaport, where he was honored at a film festival earlier this year. Kicked
out of college for confronting a professor who criticized Marlon
Brando's performance in "Julius Caesar," Dreyfuss recently studied at
St. Antony's College at the University of Oxford to develop a
curriculum for U.S. public schools.
Called The Dreyfuss
Initiative, the curriculum would use scholarly presentations in videos
and the Oscar-winning actor "as a storyteller, to engage, enlighten and
empower students of all ages in an entertaining way," according to an
outline. Dreyfuss said he would work with civic and educational groups
to promote the teaching tools.
