TxCC Notes-From the Assistant Director
|
Happy Memorial Day
Weekend!
TXCC recently
submitted a project concept paper on behalf of a six school consortium to bring
a series of financial management, and pre-graduation career prep workshops to
their student bodies. Sadly, we were not chosen for this RFP, but we will
continue to search for grants and other funding that compliments the service
learning and civic engagement activities of our member campuses. Some of these
fits are very obvious, such as health related grants for our members with
nursing programs, agri-science related grants for schools with a heavy
agri-business focus, etc., but we hold no illusions that we are capturing every
school's less publicized programs and projects. One way to make certain that
your school is being targeted for some extra funding is to keep TXCC in the loop
regarding your best practices. A quick paragraph and a picture or two posted on
the Texas Campus compact Service Learning blog at www.education.meetup.com/96, will
allow us to cast a wider net for potential support for your
projects.
TXCC has received
nine applications from member schools to become TXCC VISTA host sites, as of the
host site deadline of May 15th. TXCC has been awarded 25 VISTA slots
so we have more supply than demand at this time. A few schools have stated that
they needed a little bit more time to complete their applications, but it still
looks like we may have to give some slots back. If your campus has never hosted
a VISTA before and you think a college graduate program coordinator could assist
you with your service learning, civic engagement, and college readiness efforts,
act quickly. We will continue to work with everyone right up to the wire or
until we run out of VISTA slots or host sites. If your school has hosted a TXCC
VISTA for three or more years, you will have to participate in cost sharing with
AmeriCorps for another VISTA, but even if that is the case, you are still
getting a qualified employee for less than $10,000.00 a year.
Enjoy your weekend
and please take some time to reflect on the incredible sacrifices made by our
family, friends, and neighbors of the U.S. Armed Services.

 | Campus Compact Professional Development Institute To Be Developed Online
|
Campus Compact's ground-breaking Professional Development Institute for
community service and service-learning professionals is moving to an
online format. As more campuses institute travel restrictions, and as
new technologies make it possible to interact more effectively, Campus
Compact is responding by creating a series of webinars geared toward
institutionalizing civic engagement and implementing best practices in
community service-learning. This new format will allow more
participants to connect over a greater period of time, extending the
reach of the curriculum while facilitating deeper learning. More
information about this series, slated to begin this fall, will be
available in the coming months. The in-person Professional Development Institute will not be held in 2009.
