TxCC Executive Director's note

I am constantly reminded of one of my favorite quotes each time I travel to visit a new member or potential member campus:  "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." 
 
Since January, I have visited, toured, given keynote talks, and moderated panels for:  the University of Texas at Brownsville; Texas Tech University; the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio; Texas State University, Houston Community College; Texas Tech University; and most recently, Stephen F. Austin University. 
 
In June, I will be meeting with Texas A & M University, Kilgore College, Panola College, Angelina College, Texas College, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, LeTourneau University, Tyler Junior College, and the University of Texas at Tyler.  And, I know that when I leave these campuses that I, too, will be reminded of Maya Angelou's quote once again as the hospitality that I am always shown is beyond amazing. 
 
The opportunity to dialogue with students, administrators, faculty, and presidents about their community based service learning and civic engagement activities is truly a blessing.  I'd like to thank each of you for your personal commitment to higher education in the state of Texas and for all that you are doing on your respective campuses to help our state to "Close the Gaps" of educational inequity. 
 
And, there is a great deal of awareness around service, particularly with the change in administration; President Obama and Vice President Biden will expand AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps, engage retiring Americans, and set up an America's Voice Initiative to send Americans who are fluent speakers of local languages to expand our public diplomacy.  President Obama is also setting a goal that all middle and high school students perform 50 hours of community service a year, and he will establish a new tax credit that is worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year. 
 
I personally feel really good about the work that our college students, our states best resources, are doing across Texas and hope that you do to.

Austin Community College District celebrates its 35th Anniversary

Austin Community College District,  (a member of Texas Campus Compact),  held a large party to commemorate its 35th Anniversary on April 25. 2009. 

Texas Campus Compact joins with the Austin Community and others in sending ACC our warmest congradulations for many well served years in Austin and its surrounding communities. 

Austin Community College has enjoyed 35 years of incredible growth and progress.  "Since opening September 17, 1973, ACC has grown to become the primary gateway to higher education and training for a majority of Central Texans.  The college enrolls more than 35, 000 credit students in a service area stretching over eight counties.  ACC has has seven campuses, nine regional centers, and dozens of additional teaching sites." The Campaign for Jonathan Neerman for Dallas County Republican Chairman is looking for Summer Interns
The Campaign for Jonathan Neerman is looking for 1-2 interns to help the Neerman Campaign over the summer. The interns would need to commit to 20 hours/week and would help with data entry, event planning, web management, and other tasks. Texas State economic impact on state pegged at almost $1 billion
Texas State University-San Marcos has a statewide economic impact of almost $1 billion annually, according to an economic impact study released recently by the university.
The study was conducted by James P. LeSage, holder of the McCoy Endowed Chair in Urban and Regional Economics in the Department of Finance and Economics in Texas State's McCoy College of Business Administration.
In his study, LeSage examined university spending and jobs created as a result of that spending in Hays County, the Central Texas region (defined as Hays County plus the counties of Bastrop, Bexar, Burnet, Caldwell, Comal, Guadalupe, Travis and Williamson) and the entire state of Texas. The study is based on data collected for the 2006 fiscal year.
