America's Colleges and Universities Celebrate Earth Day
|
Yesterday, colleges and universities around the country held events
to commemorate Earth Day. Activities ranged from a student
sustainability fair at Colorado State University,
where students learned steps they can take to live a more sustainable
lifestyle, to organized tree plantings, recycling and clean-up
projects, and educational presentations on the environment and global
warming. A "Community Earth Day" was held at Loyola University Chicago,
where leaders and the general public from surrounding communities were
invited to campus in an attempt to raise awareness about environmental
problems while highlighting the environmental initiatives of local
businesses and organizations. At some institutions, such as Scottsdale Community College and the University of North Texas, Earth Day became Earth Week and was the occasion for week-long events.

Links Facebook with Low GPA
|
It was probably just a matter of time until someone, somewhere, found a
statistical correlation between the highly popular social networking tool,
Facebook, and lower grades. A pair of Ohio researchers found just such a
link, based on a survey. A pair of Ohio researchers presented their
research April 16 in San Diego at the annual meeting of the American
Education Research Association. They surveyed 219 students at Ohio
State University, including 102 undergraduate students and 117 graduate
students. Of the participants, 148 said they had a Facebook
account.
The findings: College students who use Facebook spend less time
studying and have lower grade point averages than students who have not
signed up for the social networking Web site. However, more than
three-quarters of Facebook users claimed that their use of the site didn't
interfere with their studies.
"We can't say that use of Facebook leads to lower grades and less
studying-but we did find a relationship there," said Aryn Karpinski,
co-author of the study and a doctoral student in education at Ohio
State.
The report underscores the age-old distinction between correlation
and causation:
"There may be other factors involved, such as personality traits,
that link Facebook use and lower grades," she said. "It may be that if
it wasn't for Facebook, some students would still find other ways to
avoid studying, and would still get lower grades. But perhaps the lower
GPAs could actually be because students are spending too much time
socializing online."

University of Texas Receives $30 Million Challenge Grant From Gates Foundation
|
The University of Texas at Austin College of Natural Sciences has announced a $30 million challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Awarded as part of a $120 million capital campaign, the grant will
help fund construction of a 234,000-square-foot complex featuring
state-of-the-art laboratory space, classrooms, faculty and graduate
student offices, a two-hundred-seat lecture hall, and some two dozen
discussion areas and seminar rooms. Research on issues including
climate change, genetics and DNA, safer and more fuel-efficient cars,
and cybersecurity will benefit from "research clusters" throughout the
building - large collaborative laboratories surrounded by faculty,
graduate student, and visiting researcher offices. The building complex
will be named the Bill & Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex in
honor of the gift.
