Texas Campus Compact News From Executive Director, Patricia Paredes, M.A.

               Dear Colleagues and Valued Members,

Let me begin by wishing you all a Happy Easter and Happy Passover.

I'd like to share some exciting news with you!  Due to our successful lobbying efforts, Representative Jim Pitts, chair of the Appropriations Committee, put a Ryder into Article 11 for Texas Campus Compact [at my request] - in the amount of $100,000 a year.  We are currently waiting for the members of the Conference Committee to be named; once named we will be encouraging each of you to help our efforts to get this Ryder adopted through a massive letter writing appeal.  This is the first time in the history of The Compact that we have ever been put into Article 11, otherwise known as the "wish list."  If we are successful in becoming a line item on the Legislative Budget, we will be able to reinvest these monies back to our members - back to the state of Texas, ensuring that best practices of service learning and civic engagement activities are implemented, helping to save our state precious funds while our best resources, our college students, address critical community needs and issues.   It is our hope that, together, we can all make this happen.  We will keep all of you posted.  In the meantime, I'd like to personally thank each of you for your valuable contributions to higher education.

Peace.
Patricia Paredes M.A.

Wanted: 100 middle school math and science teachers interested in collaborating to improve their teaching skills.
The University of Houston will announce today a program allowing middle school math and science teachers to earn a master's degree for free. The new Integrated Science, Math and Reflective Thinking degree will be offered online, and the first group of 25 teachers will begin classes in summer 2010.
"We're looking for future leaders in the field," said Jennifer Chauvot, assistant professor of math education at UH and one of three faculty members developing the curriculum.
The program, dubbed iSMART, is funded by a $3 million grant from the Greater Texas Foundation, a Bryan-based organization focused on higher education.

The National Science Foundation and the U.S. Forest Service invite proposals to enable interdisciplinary teams of scientists and practitioners to conduct research on the dynamic interactions between people and natural ecosystems in urban settings in ways that will advance both fundamental and applied knowledge.  Because of the highly integrated character of the coupled human and natural ecosystems that will be studied, these teams will require the involvement of researchers from the social and behavioral, ecological, and technical sciences.  Up to 16 awards of up to two-years duration and up to $300,000 per award are expected to be made.
