Texas Campus Compact News From Executive Director, Patricia Paredes, M.A.
|
Dear Colleagues and Valued
Members,
Let me begin by wishing you all a
Happy Easter and Happy Passover.
I'd like to share some exciting
news with you! Due to our successful
lobbying efforts, Representative Jim Pitts, chair of the Appropriations
Committee, put a Ryder into Article 11 for Texas Campus Compact [at my request] - in the amount of $100,000 a
year. We are currently waiting for the
members of the Conference Committee to be named; once named we will be
encouraging each of you to help our efforts to get this Ryder adopted through a
massive letter writing appeal. This is
the first time in the history of The Compact that we have ever been put into
Article 11, otherwise known as the "wish list." If we are successful in becoming a line item
on the Legislative Budget, we will be able to reinvest these monies back to our
members - back to the state of Texas, ensuring that best practices of service
learning and civic engagement activities are implemented, helping to save our state precious funds while
our best resources, our college students,
address critical community needs and issues.
It is our hope that, together, we can all make this happen. We will keep all of you posted. In the meantime, I'd
like to personally thank each of you for your valuable contributions to higher
education.
Peace.
Patricia Paredes
M.A. Executive Director Texas Campus Compact

Texas Tech University Race, Ethnicity, and Community Engagement in Higher Education Conference October 29- October 31, 2009, Call for Proposals
|
The Race, Ethnicity, and Community Engagement in Higher Education conference at Texas Tech University welcomes submis-sions from academic professionals engaged in service-centered praxis, researchers in fields of applied or experiential education, re-gional, local, and international practitioners in service-learning and other forms of community engagement, undergraduate or gradu-ate students with service-learning and other community engagement experience, and students, faculty, administrators, and agency personnel that support community-based research initiatives. The conference encourages participants to address a wide range of issues related to research, curriculum design, assessment, institu-tional support, diversity, community connection, partnerships, and student development. The goal of the conference is to provide participants with multiple perspectives on critical issues, paradigms, and challenges related to race, ethnicity and community en-gagement in higher education.
Conference Themes: Race, Praxis, and Curriculum The conference will be grounded with three tracks; panel proposals should address one or more of these issues: Critical Race Studies: Ethnic Communities and Service-Learning or other community in Higher Education.
Praxis in Experiential Education: Best Practices for Integrating University, Community, and Students as Mutual Beneficiaries in Social Justice Efforts.
Curriculum and Paradigms: Developing Cultural Competencies in Service-Learning, other community engagement, and Commu-nity-Based Research Curriculum.
