Update on The Compact: By Executive Director, Patricia Paredes M. A.
|
I leave for Texas Tech University shortly but wanted to get you this report prior to my travels.
Since January, my speaking engagements to faculty
about service learning have taken me to UT Brownsville and to Houston Community
College, and I will be traveling to Texas Tech University on the 26 - today -- and 27, to
speak at their first annual Community Engagement Conference. And, I am
scheduled to moderate the UTHSC's first conference on service learning on April
2.
The Compact has created a lot of
buzz during the session this year as we hosted our first Lobby Day at The
Capitol, last March 9. Our team met with 24 members of the Texas Legislature
--- 7 senators and 17 representatives - highlighting TXCC and the importance of
service learning and how it is helping to close our state's gaps of educational
inequity. The result: Representative Jim Pitts offered to put forth a
Ryder for TXCC, in the amount of $100k annually, to become a line item on the
legislative budget. Other states allocate money directly to their Campus
Compact's, for example:
Currently, Florida Campus Compact received $450,000 in funding from
the Florida Legislature; Washington Campus Compact receives $250,000; and
Utah receives
$100,000 from the Utah Legislature... read more...

Purdue 'compliment guys' can't give enough of a good thing
|
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Along a central walkway on Purdue University's
campus, two students are on a crusade to make people happy.
To a passing guy dressed in Purdue sweats they say, "Love your school spirit."
To the woman carrying the trendy black bag: "Very nice purse." "It's very large."
And for the student who ran past them in knee-high leather boots: "I like your hustle." "I like your boots, too."
Tired of people being so down in the dumps amid the worst economy in
decades, sophomores Cameron Brown and Brett Westcott-better known as
the "Compliment Guys"-have taken it upon themselves to cheer up the
campus.
From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. every Wednesday, they stand outside the
chemistry building in the shadow of the university's Bell Tower with
their "Free Compliments" sign. They're there in the rain. In the snow.
And this week when the windchill made it feel like 10 degrees.

You Can't Handle the Truthiness!
|
It appears the grass is still greener on the other side. A
group of students near Tinseltown think a young movie star lacks the
gravitas to give a commencement speech, while others in Virginia say
their graduation day needs a little more star power. It didn't
take long for students at the University of California at Los Angeles
to raise objections to the selection of James Franco, a 2008 UCLA
graduate and actor in such films as Spiderman, Milk and Pineapple Express. Opposition is also forming at the University of Virginia, where a grassroots movement to recruit Stephen Colbert for "Final Exercises"failed to sway President John Casteen. Casteen went instead with Judge J. Harvey Wilkinson IIII, a U.S. Court of Appeals judge with a résumé that includes a lot of impressive work - just not a show on Comedy Central...
