National Service-Learning Conference draws young leaders, educatorService Learnings, and community leaders from 50 states and 35 countries to Nashville, Tenn., March 18-21, where they will engage in community-services projects in Nashville.

This week thousands of young leaders, educators, and community leaders from all 50 states and at least 35 countries will convene in Nashville, Tenn., for the 20th Annual National Service- Learning Conference, March 18-21. "We are excited to bring over 2000 service-learning practitioners to Nashville," says Jim Kielsmeier, the National Youth Leadership Council's CEO and founder. "This year's event is especially exciting, as the Obama Administration has a strong interest in national service and its k-12 application: service-learning,"

General session speakers include Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder; James Hildreth, Director of the Center for AIDS Health Disparities Research at Meharry Medical College in Nashville; Peter Benson, President of the Minneapolis-based Search Institute; and Dame Elizabeth Hoodless, Executive Director the United Kingdom's leading volunteer and training agency Community Service Volunteers...read more

NEW HORIZONS IN EDUCATION
SPECIAL ISSUE ON SERVICE-LEARNING
Deadline for Paper Submission: 1st May, 2009

The New Horizons in Education will launch the second special issue [Vol.57, No.3] on Service-Learning in December 2009. We have invited Prof. Alfred C. M. CHAN (Chair Professor of Social Gerontology, Department of Sociology and Social Policy; Director, Office of Service-Learning, Lingnan University, Hong Kong) to be the Guest Editor. Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that combines rigorous academic study with voluntary community service. Student's academic study is enhanced through the process of critical thinking and self-reflection structured in the service tasks performed by the student. Learning through serving others helps facilitate students' personal growth as well as provides lifelong commitment to service, research and leadership.

To further develop the knowledge, innovation and practice of Service-Learning in higher education, the Office of Service-Learning at Ling.nan University had its first Asia-Pacific Regional Conference titled the "Theory and Practice of Service-Learning: Cross-Cultural Service-Learning Programme in Asia-Pacific Region" in 2007. The 6th Pan-Asian Initiative on Service-Learning and the 2nd Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning titled "Crossing Borders, Making Connections: Service-Learning in Diverse Communities" will also be held in the coming June. To further convey this new concept of pedagogy to other parts of the world, a special issue focusing on Service-Learning will be published in "New Horizons in Education" in December, 2009...read more

Letter in Support of the GIVE Act

Dear Friends,

I am writing with an important update on the service legislation moving through Congress.

This morning, the House Education and Labor Committee approved the GIVE Act on a 34-3 vote. We are extremely pleased by the bi-partisan nature in which this bill moved through committee. The GIVE Act will now move to the Rules Committee early next week and then to the House floor for a vote on Tuesday or Wednesday.

We now need to show our support for the GIVE Act in the House. We have pasted below the letter we intend to send to Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Hoyer and Minority Leader Boehner by 9AM on Monday morning...read more
