Texas Campus Compact Visits the Texas State Legislature
Patricia, Jim Lynn and Amy on the steps to the capital. Texas Campus Compact state office staffers visited members of the Texas Legislature on March 9th and 10th, to pursue important Legislative requests, that if granted, will be returned to members of The Compact.

TXCC staff, led by Executive Director, Patricia Paredes met with over 18 state Senators and Representatives and members of the Legislative staff.  By the time we left the Capitol, we had even become friends with the guards.  Stay tuned for more updates as the session continues.

ACC Students Win Advertising Awards

ACC Logo
AUSTIN, Texas, March 10, 2009 - Two Austin Community College students won prestigious Addy Awards for their graphic design entries during this year's competition hosted by Austin Advertising Federation.

Summer Teague-Strotkamp earned a Silver Addy in packaging for her work, "Martine's Baked Goods." Ryan Robbins earned a Bronze Addy in promotion/point of purchase for his "Drunken Sailor Ale."

"We are very proud of Ryan and Summer and especially thankful to Adjunct Professor Meagan McKeeman," says Priscilla Wicker, chair of the Visual Communication Department. "Their success is the result of their hard work throughout the graphic design program and the excellent instruction of the team of design instructors led by Gail Bayeta."

Teague-Strotkamp and Robbins produced their projects in fall 2008 as part of their Design Communication II class with Adjunct Assistant Professor Meagan McKeeman.
The Addys were presented February 19.

Using Photography to teach about Service Learning

Jimmy and Rosalynn Cater Partnership Foundation provides grants and awards to recognize the best practices in campus-community partnerships and the best new ideas for student-led community service learning. Strategies include awards for the best campus-community partnership program, grants for innovative community service ideas of students and online connectivity for students, faculty, administrative staff and community organizations.

We received this grant with the help of Logan Aimone of the National Scholastic Press Associationas a way to help promote service learning and photography all at once. By taking our knowledge and going out into our community to teach area high schools, we are, in a way, also a part of a service learning project. Our knowledge may be primarily self- taught but we are helping to get photography a little more recognition and to show students what service learning is all about.
Our goal was to do a training session on the basics of photography at area high schools with the photographers from the newspaper, yearbook and other photography classes. At the end of the training we explained to them what service learning was, gave them some examples and their task. Their task was to go into their community, or school and document a service learning project using the knowledge we passed along to them. Upon receiving the photos, we have made this site to show their hard work to the world. We appreciate everyone's help in making this happen and being able to help train such promising photographers.
