| Greetings! | |
Welcome to the January 2011 edition of Food for Thought.
By now everyone would be aware of our floods here in Queensland and Northern New South Wales.
There is a great photo essay here from our local paper.
I'm sure our collective thoughts and prayers are with all those affected.
A quick look at my subscriber list shows I have a great many readers in some of the areas badly affected.
I also have a large subscriber base in Europe.
Even though most of our news here is taken up with our wet weather on the east coast, and the dry weather on the west coast, we also know that over the holiday break, parts of Europe were experiencing a big freeze. While I'm sure most of the children saw the beauty in the snow and ice, I'm equally sure a lot of businesses there, like here, could have done without the disruption that natural disasters tend to cause.
One sign shop colleague in Scotland arrived at work to find a pipe had burst in his roof due to the cold, and he was confronted with his ceiling in a thousand pieces on the floor, water cascading down his walls, and thousands of pounds in damage to computers, stock and machinery.
We also experienced damage here with a massive hail storm, smashing skylights, damaging cars and flooding yards. Our own workshop has a leaking roof which we can't get fixed until the rain stops, and my parents have smashed skylights too. We were fortunate to get our cars undercover, although they did get minor damage with the hail, but plenty of our neighbours suffered much worse. Broken windscreens, sunroofs and bodywork that was pelted with hail. A local elderly woman caught in the storm was knocked down with the hail, and rushed to hospital.
Its probably not the start we really wanted for 2011, but I guess it can only get better, surely it can't get much worse. |

| It seems you are never too old... |
Ahmad Mohamad Isa, is a 110-year-old Malaysian man who has been looking for wife number 6, after outliving four other partners, and divorcing the 5th.
He is very lonely, he told the local paper, although with 20 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, I'm at a loss to know why.
The Malay-language newspaper Utusan Malaysia has reported that he wanted company and a wife to take care of him.
I'm sure most men had the same view when they were single to. Am I right? Its also probably the first 'bubble' to burst in the early days of their new life together. The other notable one is to do with the toilet seat, but that is another article altogether.
Anyway, back to the story at hand.
At 82-years-old, a widow of 30 years and mother of nine, Sanah Ahmad is a spring chicken compared to our centenarian. She is keen to marry again too, and I guess at that age, and with the utmost respect, I guess you don't ask too many questions, or be overly fussy. She asked her children to contact Ahmad's family to make arrangements.
Ahmads response, some would say, is typical of a bachelor.
It doesn't matter who she is, as long as she can cook for me. It is lonely to live alone and I am afraid to sleep alone. If I have a wife she can take care of me
But what did she see in the new mystery man?
Sanah told reporters that she was attracted to Ahmad as he bears a striking resemblance to her late husband and both men shared the same name.
I just hope she can cook, otherwise he may be looking for wife number seven.

| Important information for husbands... |
Ever been confounded with solutions to age old questions? Ever been really stumped at those times of the year, when making the wrong decision could actually change the course of your life?
What question could raise such a quandary? From a mans perspective, the question is simple. What is the little woman expecting for her wedding anniversary this year.
It sends a shudder down your spine as you read it, doesn't it?
Never fear, I'm here to help.
Most women will tell you that the 1st anniversary gift is special. When a women says 'special', she really means expensive. That is the first rule to learn if you are new at this marriage game.
Now, your wife of one year will imply that she needs something unique. She'll be thinking an eternity ring, diamond necklace... that sort of thing. I'm here to tell you that the 1st anniversary is Paper. That's right - Paper.
You could stay with the 'unique' theme and buy her a McDonalds gift certificate, but I'd seriously suggest it would not be a good move. Perhaps tickets to the 'game' might be received better. But then...perhaps not
The second is Cotton. New Y front underwear is probably not a wise choice either, but you are probably on the right track.
For the 3rd anniversary, Leather is the go, and the 4th is Linen, although I'd urge you to think past a Tea Towel.

| wwf or pdf?.. |
The World Wide Fund for Nature has introduced a print format called, what for it, the WWF format.
They are calling it a new 'green' file format, as it is yet another idea of trying to save paper - and consequently trees!
The WWF format is simply a PDF that cannot be printed and thus avoid unnecessary paper use.Of course, if we are that way inclined, it is also a good way to frustrate the life out of the receiver, who may, for whatever reason, wish to have a hard copy.
The major 'selling point' is to save trees and help the environment. Simply decide for yourself which documents don't need printing out - then simply save them as WWF.
The WWF file format compliments and reinforces other well-established campaigns - most notably the "Think Before You Print" initiative. WWF encourage companies and consumers to promote responsible paper use.
To participate in this campaign download the free software to support the WWF format, save your document(s) as WWF and send it out.
Once you install it, in the Print menu of your PDF reader you will get to see a save as WWF option.
There are obviously benefits to this idea, but the only issue I have, as a writer, is by not letting the page be printed, it may actually impact the environment greater. I mean, by forcing the reader to fire up their computer to read and perhaps reread a document, it is actually forcing them to use other resources like electricity etc. I wonder if a printed page may not therefore be a better idea in the long term.

| Kitten AWOL for 11 years.... |
A BRITISH cat missing for 11 years was reunited with her owner on Christmas Eve, local media reported.
Salem was a kitten when she was given to six-year-old Chloe Hill, from Halesowen, West Midlands, central England, the (Birmingham) Sunday Mercury reported.
The little girl was heartbroken when her pet disappeared weeks later, but on Christmas Eve Britain's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) called to say that Salem had been handed in and had been identified from her microchip.
Chloe, now 17, said, "I just couldn't believe it when I saw Salem again. I never thought she would come back after all these years. It was such a great surprise, especially on Christmas Eve, it really made my Christmas.''
I can't help but think there is a family out there wondering what happened to their 11 year old moggy. It is a win win for pussy though.

| Finally... |
That's about all for this, our first edition for the year.
We are back at work from the 10th. As I mentioned last year, I took delivery of two new machines just before the end of the year.
They are very different from my previous machines. They are wider, have almost no odor, run on full Eco Solvent inks, and are a much better environmental package than our old units.
Our new units produce gold, silver and other metallic effects on demand and have over 512 metallic combinations for color customization, and the new Metallic Texture Library adds 26 unique texture fills, adding value and sophistication to any graphic or marketing message. They are also capable of printing white text on clear material, making them ideal for decals to glass.*
The Metallic Silver ink has been recognized as a DPI Product of the Year, an accolade that reflects its exceptional image quality.
These new machines bring the last 20 years of innovation and expertise to one device, including the integrated printing and contour cutting capabilities found in our old machines plus next generation print head technology and accelerated print speeds. I am still in the learning curve though, so the introduction of Metallic printing will be something that I'll introduce over the next few weeks. Its fair to say though that the results I've experienced to date are simply stunning.
Our new machines are Energy Star certified and includes advanced features that minimize ink consumption, reducing environmental waste and operational costs. The units are also certified by Roland's Eco-Label system, an ISO 14021 Type II label certifying compliance with a company's internal environmental standards. The ink cartridges are also eligible for the Roland recycling program.
I'd like to once again thank you for your support in the past, and look forward to communicating with you soon. You can keep in touch via my blog site at http://shanedrew.com/. Submit comments (keep them clean as the site is moderated) or post it to your facebook wall. We have also included a contact form if you want to communicate with us directly.
*Metalic and white are printed in hi resolution at slow speeds
Until next time, take care
