An Important Reminder
Remember, if you work longer than 17 hours continual, your co-ordination and concentration is the same as having a .05 BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentrate) ..... If you can't drive on australian roads at that level, should you be at work or in charge of machinery?

Fatigue is often implicated as a contributory factor in many workplace and commuting deaths especially after the 9th hour of work.

Greetings!

Welcome to the December Issue of Drews Nooze.

In this day and age of electronic media, we all seem to take the ease of communication without much thought.

An interesting article recently on news.com.au gives us a stark reminder that information we innocently make public can also be used against us.

The article titled 'Facebook bikini photo 'cut insurance'' reminds us that FACEBOOK can indeed be a double-edged sword.

29 year old Nathalie Blanchard was on long term sick leave for more than a year claiming severe depression.

But, her insurance company, Manulife, cut her health benefits claiming she was healthy after seeing pictures of her smiling in bikini at the beach.

Manulife cited several pictures posted on her social networking website page, including some showing her enjoying herself during a male strip-tease show at a Chippendales bar, celebrating her birthday and bathing in the sun.

Based on these postings, the firm claimed Ms Blanchard was no longer depressed.

Manulife stated that they "would not deny or terminate a valid claim solely based on information published on websites such as Facebook." But the company did recognize that it uses such information to learn more about their clients.

May be worth remembering next time you make a post on popular social networking sites, blogs, forums and chat rooms I guess.

AN Indian villager used a hammer and chisel over the span of 14 years to carve a tunnel through a rocky mountain so that he could park his truck in front of his house. "I could not park my truck near my house since the mountain blocked my path," Ramchandra Das, 53, who lives in eastern Bihar state's Gaya district, said.

Mr Das said fear of thieves stealing his truck prompted him to work on the tunnel all by himself after authorities refused help. "I had to leave my truck miles away, so I decided to do something about it myself," Mr Das said by telephone.

Local villagers, who had to trek for miles to get around the mountain are using the 14ft wide tunnel to reach their farms, and praising Mr Das for his work.

"We rarely come across a man who can work so hard to achieve his goal," Prabhat Kumar Jha, a local government official said.

McDonalds no more?

The tiny volcanic nation of Iceland was one of the hardest hit by the global financial crisis. As their banks floundered, the national currency crumbled claiming an unexpected casualty, McDonald's.

Iceland was home to two McDonald's restaurants that are now in the process of closing.

The financial issues with the Icelandic McDonald's restaurants resulted from a number of factors: the market size was small and all ingredients had to be sourced from Germany; these issues, combined with the falling value of the Icelandic Krona, made for expensive hamburgers.

According to Jon Gardar Ogmundsson, the owner of Lyst (the company that ran McDonald's in Iceland), the restaurants will be rebranded and will sell more affordable Icelandic food.

He also added that there was no chance of McDonald's returning to the country.

Real Justice

Gregory McCalium, 23, showed up at court looking the worse for wear not as a result of overzealous policing, rather because he got on the wrong end of two of a  grandfather's right hooks.

When Frank Corti discovered Gregory McCalium trying to break into his Oxford (UK) home, he confronted him, only to have the young man "take a slash" at him with a knife.

The 71-year-old grandfather, who also happened to be a former army boxer responded with two right hooks that left McCalium unconscious.

The former featherweight then made a citizen's arrest and waited for police to arrive.

In a plea for leniency, McCalium's lawyer told the court that his client "looked like a car accident".

justiceMcCalium's lawyer told the court his client "looked like a car accident," and went on to add that "Photos of the scene looked more like a murder scene."

The Judge was unsympathetic and before sentencing McCalium to four-and-a-half years commented that "(he) got what he deserved."

Rough justice? Most would agree with the judge Im sure'.

It is worth checking everyday for the free offer. Not everything will appeal, but every now and then something crops up that contains a little gem.

Before I go, I'd also like to congratulate our 12 year old daughter, Tiffani, for being awarded 2009 Year 7 DUX for her school. The trophy sits pride of place beside our sons 2007 Citizenship Award from the same school.

Tiffani DUX award
Both names are also on the respective awards' perpetual trophy. My wife and I are incredibly proud of them both.

That's about it for this edition, and this year.

My family wishes to say thanks again for all the support this year. It is very much appreciated.

It would not be too much of an understatement to say that it has been a pretty hard year, for the most part, totally out of our control. Most of my readers have experienced similar issues, some unfortunately have experienced worse. I hope we all experience a better 2010.

Finally, may you all have a safe break and come back to work next year refreshed and ready to roll.

For those that are working through the break, lets hope it is not too hot.

We will be closed from December 24th to January 6th, reopening on the 7th. I will be around though, so any business that is working that needs signs, please call me and I'll see what we can do.

Once again, take care, and thanks again for your business and readership.

Take care, till next time.

Sincerely,
Shane Drew
