Shane has been writing his newsletters since 2002, as a release to stress and depression.

Drews Sign It Pty Ltd have been supporters of several major charities and not-for-profit organisations, donating over $30,000 in signage in 2008 alone.

A recent highlight is his appointment as a Green Guardian for his support of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, on Queensland's Southern Gold Coast.
Greetings!

Welcome to the August edition of Drew Nooze.

I'd like to thank all those who have contacted me and made positive comments about the newsletter. I've had a few readers send it on to friends who have also subscribed.

Thanks very much.

Well, it's been a bumper month this month. We have had some big jobs like the first of 3 trucks for Leisure Pools - we did the baby one first - as well as doing other projects that have kept us pretty busy.

We've also started doing some large projects with our new Gecko Film, and we've been holding off on some of our vehicle wraps waiting for the newest 3M vehicle film, which came into stock this week.

We have also been waiting on new laminates for our latest machine, the Seal Liquid Laminator. Fortunately this has also arrived in the last week, so we can now offer professionally laminated banners, one of the few companies in Queensland to be able to do so.

Essentially, the laminator was purchased for the wholesale side of our business, but it is obviously available to the retail clients too.

I'll be getting some samples together over time, and will send these out with orders in the near future.

Any questions on these products, please don't hesitate to ask.

A Changing Workplace

Working

Amanda Gome, founder and publisher of the online magazine SmartCompany.com.au, in an article dated July 3 2009, gives the warning that now is the time to get aggressive in business.

She states the obvious for most of us when she writes "At times in the last six months it has been awfully quiet. Many business owners hunkered down, and surveys showed us that they have been focusing on their core customers and shoring up those relationships. They are also reviewing, retrenching and building their teams and cutting costs to become lean machines.

Now comes the fun part: Aggressive expansion."

"Business owners", she says, "are telling her that they are acutely conscious that the next six months is a crucial time to be aggressively attacking the marketplace. And they need to start now and get their order books filled before the last quarter of 2009."

Results from a recent St George survey of 1000 Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) shows that 44% plan to increase their market share, with 9% having already begun to roll out this strategy and 32% planning to.

Further, 25% plan to increase staff levels in the current downturn.

She goes on to state that 57% are increasing new business development (18% already have been, 38% plan to be) and 55% are increasing product and service offering (20% already have been, 35% plan to be).

The good news, she says, for aggressive smart companies is that although conditions are still depressed, more activity is being planned.
Amanda points out that if businesses want to chase market share, or are planning to hire and develop new products and services, they must spend now to get returns in the next 6 months.

SMEs must make sure they know who will be spending money and how to target these opportunities. And their sales teams need to be reinvigorated and aggressively out there now chasing down every opportunity, because it will still take more time, more effort and more value to secure these deals.

Diabetes

My Grandfather was a type 1 diabetic, and my father is a type 2 diabetic. I have friends and clients that are diabetics too. A very good friend of mine, a woman I've known most of my adult life, is a counsellor specialising in diabetes related issues and also autistic spectrum disorder.

If you need to get more information or help on the subject, please feel free to use the contact link at the end of this article.

Michele's approach is rather unique in that she offers counselling online using email, skype, MSN or ICQ. It lets her openly and honestly discuss clients concerns and problems in the privacy of their own environment.

So, if you or a family member suffer from DIABETES,
ASD (autistic spectrum disorder), Life Stressors, Worry or Anxiety, and have questions or an inability to cope, it may pay to give her a call.

If you would like help with identifying and understanding the issues related to changing behaviours, goal setting and developing coping & management skills to allow for positive life experiences, Michele is only a few keystrokes away.

Michele says "All of us at some time in our lives come face to face with problems we need to deal with - stressors of life, chronic illness, work/school/life balance, marital breakup, or the death of a loved one. Some of us are able to work through these problems by ourselves, seeking support from talking to family and friends, yet others prefer talking to a counsellor, allowing the counsellor to help identify the stressors and exploring strategies together to implement positive outcome"

If you don't need her services, perhaps you know someone who does.

Colour - things to know.

In the sign, print and advertising markets, people rarely give enough thought to colour and contrast.

Some colours produce effects opposite to what you may actually be looking for.

Red, for instance, is an engaging and emotive color. Probably the most common colour used in Fast Food restaurants as it depicts HOT. Think McDonalds chips packaging.

Red can also be attributed to increasing anxiety in anxious people, but it also can excite calmer personalities

Research has found that red triggers the pituitary and adrenal glands and releases adrenaline. This is also the basis for marketing of expensive sports cars, and could explain why red sports cars outsell any other colour.

It also explains the myth that Red cars go faster, are harder to insure, and result in more speeding tickets than other colour.

According to some medical research, it may also increase blood pressure and breathing, and stimulate appetite and your sense of smell.

Yellow is the first color a person distinguishes in the brain. It is associated with stress, caution, and apprehension, yet it stimulates an overall sense of optimism, hope, and balance.

Excellent for use in classrooms, but not good in bedrooms, especially of young children. I wish someone had told me that before we painted our kids rooms.

Orange has the characteristics halfway between red and yellow and is one the best colors for stimulating learning.

It is important to note however that although bright colors like red, orange, and yellow spark energy and creativity, they can also increase aggressive and nervous behavior in a normal environment.

In signage, they are usually used to good effect with complimentary darker colours, and can attract attention in the right circumstances.

Blue is the most tranquilizing color as it calms tense subjects and increases feelings of well-being. When you see blue, your brain releases eleven neurotransmitters that relax the body, and may result in a reduction of temperature, perspiration, and appetite. Its is also considered a trustworthy colour, which may explain why Police Forces around the world often use blue in their colour schemes.

Blue may be a bit too calming for most learning environments though, but is a good choice for the bedroom.

Because blue has such positive reactions, it is also one of the most popular colours in the sign industry. Most manufacturers of computer cut vinyl material have a broad range of blues to choose from, as opposed to any other range of colour.

Green is also a calming color. Research has shown that blood histamine levels may rise resulting in reduced sensitivity to food allergies. Antigens may be stimulated for overall better immune system healing, which is why green is a common colour with natural therapists..

Green also conveys a sense of nature, and is used by the environmental agencies to enforce that thought.

Brown promotes a sense of security, relaxation, and reduces fatigue but has limited use in signs as it also depicts earthy impressions, so is usually most commonly used in the gardening or landscaping industry.

Gray is the most neutral color, and is often a better choice than white.

While Dark Colors lower stress and increase feelings of peacefulness, in the wrong combination they can make a dull uninspiring sign, no matter how good the design..

pools
Congratulations to Leisure Pools. They commissioned Drew's Sign It Pty Ltd to wrap their prime mover recently. We had a limited window of opportunity to fit within the transport schedule, but managed to finished to project in record time anyway.

Using the latest 3M Wrap and laminate technology, the end result was excellent. The design was by Sharon Day of Leisure Pools, her first attempt at a 3 dimensional design.
Thats about it for this edition.

Take care till next time.

Sincerely,
Shane Drew
