Why Happiness Can Alleviate Back Pain
Research has shown that gratitude leads to happiness and is associated with lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. But what does that have to do with physical therapy?
As physical therapists, we are forever in search of ways to loosen tight muscles. And, knowing what causes muscle tightness is important in determining an appropriate treatment. Many situations cause tight muscles, and they all have some relation to stress. Whether mechanical or perceived, stress causes an unconscious and reflexive contraction that is designed to protect the individual.
A brief explanation of muscle and nerve physiology helps to understand how this works. |

"I feel better"." Those words are music to my ears. They are why I became a physical therapist. And as I run into my office to grab the chart for my next patient, I feel buoyed by the prospect that he or she too might feel better. I often say, as I run into my office mate between patients, "oh, I just adore this lady." And I do. My patients teach me a lot. That growth - a bit of knowledge or insight that can help my next patient - is part of why I love my job.
Our whole team has the same attitude. So, when we get stuck, we look to our colleagues to problem solve. Each of us has a set of tools and when they aren't the right set, we have a fall back. We have colleagues with a different set of tools and different ways of looking at a problem that can make a difference. Often, we put our heads together by co-treating to really maximize recovery. I guess going the extra step is what makes us a bit different from some of the other clinics in town. And, that all comes from valuing our patients and working in their best interests.
I hope our patients know how much we value each of them. I think they do. Many send us huge compliments; they send their sisters, husbands, daughters and friends to see us. It is a trust we don't take lightly.
So during this season of giving thanks, our biggest thanks go to each of you. You help make our days challenging and fulfilling. You provide us with opportunities to grow professionally and personally, and then you honor us with your kind referrals.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Jane for the ALTA team |

Your Questions Answered
After our last newsletter, one curious reader posed this question:
"I understand the out of network situation, but just curious, why don't you try to join the Blue Cross/Blue Shield network?"
If you believe healthcare is a right, like we do, opting out of insurance contracts is painful. But providing skilled and individualized care requires adequate treatment time and well-trained professionals. And when the cost to provide excellent service exceeds reimbursement offered by the insurance company, we have no choice but to opt out of the contract. We have made our self-pay rates as affordable as possible for those of you who wish to get the excellent services ALTA provides when billing insurance is not a feasible option.
We appreciate your questions. |
