ALTA: Experience the Best in Physical Therapy & Pilates
Exercise and Your Health
Greetings!
The Magic Bulletactive neuron

Exercise got me through physics. When I was stumped by a hard problem, I'd lace up my running shoes and head out the door for a jog. I never failed to come back with a fresh outlook and usually a ready solution to what had been puzzling me. Now I understand why.

As a physical therapist, I have always been a proponent of exercise.  I just read a book that gives me more cause to promote the healing art of movement.

The book is called Brain Rules. The author, John Medina, listed twelve rules about how a brain functions, all based on reputable research in the field of Neuroscience. Medina calls exercise the one magic bullet for improving brain function. www.brainrules.net.

older swimmersStudies have shown that the incidence of Alzheimer's decreased 50% for people who exercise. Even for people with dementia, clarity improved once they started exercising. Exercise enhanced standardized test scores for children, and those same test scores plummeted just as quickly after kids stopped moving.

Being active helps combat depression and anxiety. In some cases, people can decrease or eliminate medication after starting a regular aerobic exercise program.

Medicare Alert!Medical Symbol

As of 1/1/2010, Medicare coverage for Physical Therapy is subject to a maximum amount of $1860 per beneficiary per calendar year for outpatient services. Legislation has been introduced to fully repeal the therapy caps so access to services is not arbitrarily limited. The bill is called The Medicare Access to Rehabilitation Services Act of 2009 (S 46/HR 43). If you would like to have a voice in the pending decision, you should call or email your representatives soon.

To Call: The US Capitol Switchboard number is (202) 224-3121.  Ask for your congressman's office. After identifying yourself, tell the aide you would like to leave a message such as: "Please tell Senator/Representative (Name) that I support/oppose S.46/H.R. 43). You should state reasons for your support or opposition to the bill. Ask for your congressman's position on the bill. You may also request a written response to your call.

Walking for Health
Pick it Up,
Everybody!

Do you saunter or stroll when you walk, or is it clear as you step out that you are "on a mission"?  A recent study showed a strong correlation between slow walking speeds and risk of cardiovascular death in older adults.

A group of over 3000 adults, average age 73, were tested by asking them to walk 20 feet at their regular walking speed and at "top speed".
During the five year study, those in the slowest third of the group were three times more likely to suffer cardio-vascular death than those in the fastest group.

The message is clear: pick up the pace to improve cardiovascular health.  [November 10, 2009 BMJ online]
