First ESTN Truck Wash
On July 2, the Hendersonville group hosted the first End Slavery Truck Wash at Daily's Truck Stop in Lebanon, TN. The group offered free truck washes in exchange for the drivers' listening ear as we talked to them about human trafficking at truck stops.
Traffickers bring women and children, often called "lot lizards", to truck stops and send them to knock on cab doors or communicate via radio, offering their "services" to truckers. By refusing these offers and keeping a watchful eye, truckers have the power to end this problem.
Our hard-working crew, Brittany, Lindsy, Stephanie, Robbie, Lexie, Josh, Lindsey, Jamie, Alex, Ben, Chris, Tiffany, Bucky, Morgan, and Willie, washed ten truck cabs and two cars. There was a wide range of knowledge and experience among the drivers, but each walked away informed and willing to spread the news about trafficking on the road.
Our hats are off to the marvelous truck stop manager, Adam Mullen, who really went out of his way by allowing and promoting this event, the first of many the group hopes to host.

ESTN's Ripple Effect
This summer, End Slavery TN has had the pleasure of working with the Center for Student Missions as they host youth groups from around the country and teach them about urban issues.
Every Thursday, Lindsey and Stephanie give a presentation about the basics of human trafficking both globally and in the Nashville area. The groups also learn about the new youth-oriented site bethejam.org and how they can make a difference to end slavery.
After the presentation, the groups head to various spots around Nashville to pass out fliers or hang posters with information about local trafficking and the national trafficking hotline. The students leave with an understanding of human trafficking in the U.S. and are able to return to their homes to share what they learned with family and friends.

Equipping Hope Clinic
Nashville's Hope Clinic for Women provides a wide range of services for women, equipping people since 1983 to make healthy choices regarding past, present, and future pregnancies. Karen Karpinski and Dana Montgomery provided a presentation for their staff on human trafficking and slavery from a medical perspective. Dana is a nurse and executive director of the Rutherford County Public Health Department and is training as an ESTN presenter in the healthcare field. While the staff at Hope Clinic was unsure if they have encountered victims of human trafficking, they are now equipped to recognize the signs and offer possible rescue and assistance to a victim in the future. The staff asked astute questions and requested ESTN presenters to return later this summer or fall to provide more information about dealing with the social service aspects of trafficked victims. We're grateful to Robin Hensley, a nurse practitioner we met at the Global Health Coalition, who was instrumental in arranging the presentation and is working to establish other connections for ESTN. |

In the News
This month the US Department of State released the 2011 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, which ranks the anti-trafficking efforts of 184 nations, including our own.
Rich in information, the TIP report contains country narratives, victim stories, recommendations and much more. If you want to further educate yourself on human trafficking and slavery, the TIP Report is an excellent resource. To access the report, click here.

Operation Free Every Body!
On Saturday July 2nd, The Body Shop in the Green Hills Mall partnered with End Slavery Tennessee as part of Operation Free Every Body, distributing flyers to all their customers with information about slavery in Tennessee and about our organization. On the same day, other Body Shop locations in the USA worked with anti-slavery groups to spread the message.
Businesses and non-profits working together can have a powerful impact. Congratulations to The Body Shop for helping to educate their customers about ending slavery.
If you go to the Green Hills Mall, please tell the manager that you appreciate their partnership!
