NFSTN Walks the Walk
The Not For Sale Tennessee (NFSTN ) team comprised between half and two-thirds of all the walkers at the Stop Child Trafficking Now walk in downtown Nashville and raised $1206 toward highly trained operatives targeting the demand side of child trafficking! Special thanks to Mary Schreuder, the team captain who brought a big group of her students from Davidson Academy; to Beth Wright, our top fund-raiser; to Soroptimist International for their participation and support; and to our faithful core of NFSTN volunteers who make up the backbone of all our anti-trafficking efforts. The Soroptimists win the prize for coming the furthest; two members were from Mongolia! And Diana English and Scott Phillips get special mention for making the event a family affair. See a complete list of participants here.
A local business owner approached me at the NFSTN booth about a "very young girl" he regularly sees with her pimp on a nearby street corner. We passed details and this man's contact info on to our Nashville law enforcement contact to check out further.
You can see more pictures of our team on our website and at Metro Mix by clicking here.
Where YOU fit in: We need activists to organize a Not For Sale Free2Walk event in the spring. The walk will raise awareness through public exposure and media attention and will raise funds for the movement to end slavery in Tennessee.

A Very Special Invitation
Not For Sale Tennessee was honored to be invited to join the Global Health Coalition, an initiative of former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's organization, Hope Through Healing Hands. My husband Bill and I attended the inaugural gathering at Sen. Frist's home, where we heard from him, Big Kenny www.loveeverybody.com and others, and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting other leaders of Tennessee based NGO's. We look forward to future gatherings and the synergy of local groups working together.

Austin Peay State University this month joined the list of campuses where NFSTN is active. Mega thanks to Rev. Jodi McCallah of the Wesley Foundation who invited us, did all the advance publicity, worked out the many needed arrangements, treated us royally, and made a generous donation to our cause. (She even went the second mile, literally, tracking down the laptop I left in the room where I spoke.) Karen Karpinski and Megan Mitchell carved time out of their busy lives to come along and set up, take down, run the PowerPoints and man the tables.
We also hosted a booth at Belmont University's Community Connections Fair. And, thanks to Professor Ben Jobe, we returned to teach two more classes at Volunteer State Community College and then added yet another campus to our collegiate schedule: Motlow Community College, Smyrna Branch. The students in the two classes I taught there were a great audience, asked thoughtful questions and some immediately volunteered.
Where YOU fit in: Student leaders are needed on each campus, as well as those willing to help with NFS events, to run PowerPoint presentations or serve as interns. |
NFSTN on the Radio
Activist Ginny Ellsworth used her skills and sphere of influence to arrange for a ten minute radio interview on human trafficking in Tennessee. The show will broadcast on 78 stations throughout Tennessee on Nov. 1 on "Tennessee Matters" and on three Nashville stations later this month on "Music City Magazine."
But you don't have to wait to spin the dial to try to catch it! You get the inside scoop and can listen just by clicking on this link. |
Special Thanks
Printing is a major need and expense for NFSTN. We'd like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Terry and Ann Gann at Smyrna Graphics for their very generous gift of 2,000 posters, 1,000 each in English and Spanish, and 500 color info-postcards. Thanks also to Harpeth Graphics and Lucia Callahan (see her cute picture on the Harpeth Graphics page), each of whom donated 100 color postcards in the past. Not only is this a huge help to our small budget, it will have a ripple effect throughout the state, as posters lead to victim identification and postcards inspire new activists.
Where YOU fit in: If you have printing needs, please consider using these kind donors who undergrid our work in ending slavery in Tennessee and beyond.

Soroptimist, The Sequel
It was grand to speak again to Soroptimist International, this time at their District meeting. These wonderful women are fully engaged in the movement to end trafficking, and I thoroughly enjoyed their excellent questions and lively conversation after my presentation.
Representatives came from Huntsville, Alabama; Atlanta, Georgia; Franklin and Nashville,Tennessee and even from Mongolia. Yes, you read that correctly! One member visiting from Mongolia told us about trafficking in her own country and a time when her own daughter would have become a victim, had she not been aware of the dangers and tactics of traffickers, having been taught by her mother.
Thank-you to Diana English, who arranged this opportunity, the Soroptimists who donated the proceeds from a raffle to NFSTN , to Nicole White for manning our product table and to Karen Karpinski for running the PowerPoint presentation.
Where YOU fit in: Are you a professional woman? Consider joining! Contact area presidents Diane English here or Cheryl Bradley here.

Special Volunteer Need
Bill and I wear a lot of
hats, but one that isn't a very good fit is bookkeeping. It would be such a
godsend to have a volunteer with QuickBooks experience to handle the bookkeeping for NFSTN. The
job would be simple for someone who knows what they are doing. If this
sounds like it might be your niche, please contact us at derri@notforsalecampaign.org.
