Serve Day
Not for Sale TN hosted twenty-five incoming freshmen and upperclassmen mentors at Belmont University's annual Serve Day.
Following a one hour lecture on human trafficking, we boarded a bus and headed downtown. Students divided into groups of four or five, and dispersed to gain permission from store owners and office managers to display posters with the hotline to report human trafficking and tips for recognizing victims.
A big "thank-you" goes to Daniel Crandall of Corrections Corporation of America for donating the posters we used and volunteer Scott Phillips who led a team and served in numerous ways.
The downtown area was selected because it has many magnets for traffickers: A convention center, entertainment venues, bars, tourists, runaways, hotels, and even a school.
We received a favorable response almost everywhere, and as students reassembled, there were many enthusiastic comments about how much fun they'd had and how pumped they were about being able to do something so meaningful.
Best of all, these posters are likely to lead to victim identification and rescue! |

Marna Jane and the John School
One of our regular volunteers, Marna Jane, was willing to be stretched beyond her comfort zone, and her courage is changing lives. In late August, she made her debut as a teacher at the local John School, a program for men arrested for soliciting prostitutes. Here is a CNN story about this very same school.
Marna Jane talked to the men about the ways their choices feed the monstrous machine of human trafficking and organized crime. The Johns learned that not all the women they "buy" are willing participants in the illegal exchange of sex for money and that pimps know what sells, and turn to traffickers to provide the types of girls that are most popular.
Marna Jane commented that a number of men were visibly shocked and moved as she spoke. Afterwards, an older man approached her and talked at length about how horrified he would be if his own daughters and granddaughters were victimized and a representative from Sex Addicts Anonymous said he wished that there had been a speaker like Marna Jane when he was in the John School.
Marna Jane, Christen and Scott, NFSTN volunteers, will share teaching duties every six weeks at future sessions of the John School and we applaud them for their bravery, compassion and commitment to ending slavery. |

Thanks for your Generosity
NFSTN is in regular contact with a rescued victim. This young woman, who has been to hell and back, is working hard to turn her life around and to live a life of significance and benefit to others. She still faces many challenges and inspires me with her courage.
When this survivor moved into a new apartment, a plea for help to our mailing list resulted in a wonderful outpouring of generosity. Thanks to you, we were able to provide a sofa, table and chairs, mattress set and bed frame, a variety of household goods and cash and gift cards to be used for other needed items. One anonymous and not-wealthy couple sacrificed to give $1000, which provided for much of the furniture. Special thanks are also due to the Home Foundation for their cooperation and participation.
It was wonderful to be able to help in such a substantive way and to demonstrate that many people truly care about her well-being. In her own words: "I just want to thank you so much. I don't know how I can ever repay you for all that you have done for me. I am so happy! " |

Ten-Minute Activism
If you'd like to write words of encouragement to the young woman mentioned in the article above, please send your letters to me, or e-mail them, and I will forward them. I can't tell you her name or details about her, for her safety's sake, nor should you expect an answer, but I'm sure she'd enjoy hearing from people who care about her. Send letters to: NFSTN , P.O. Box 101, Joelton, TN 37080
If you are a person of faith, add her to your prayer list. |

Cool Cats and Hot Dogs
It is time for volunteers to face up to their activism. We'd like to show as many volunteer faces as possible on our web site...the cool cats and hot dogs of Not For Sale Tennessee! Please send a photo we can post. Go to the sample volunteer page to get some idea how it will look. A nice headshot of you, or you and spouse, if you are both volunteers...anyone who is part of the Not For Sale Tennessee team.

Spotlight on a NFSC National Initiative:
Free2Play is a Not For Sale Campaign initiative that gives rescued trafficking victims the opportunity to experience the joys of participating in sport and team activities.
Free2Play is gaining momentum among professional athletes and children's leagues. Jeremy Affeldt, pitcher for the San Francisco Giants and www.teamfree2play.org member, has invited Dave Batstone to come spend a weekend with the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers. They will talk about incorporating the Free2Play platform across major league baseball. The Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) in San Francisco is pledging their athletes to be Free2Play.
Funds raised by Free2Play will build a basketball court for Kru Nam's kids in Thailand and is already providing MISSSEY's girls in California with play and sports equipment.
How Can You Help? Invite your school, church, fitness or youth club to be Free2Play because one group joining locally turns into a 100 joining nationally. Large numbers of local athletes make the platform more attractive to professional athletes, which in turn make it more attractive to local athletes. ONE person taking action, replicated throughout the country, works powerfully to allow rescued children to be Free2Play. |

Introducing Nicole White, NFSTN's Fall Intern
Nicole White is a student at Belmont University who is originally from Denver, Colorado. An English major, she is looking into graduate school as well as a career in the nonprofit arena after graduating in May 2010. After seeing the movie Taken and hearing about Not For Sale Tennessee in the Spring of 2009, Nicole felt a deep calling to do her part to help abolish modern day slavery. We're excited to have Nicole joining us and welcome her to the NFSTN team!

Fun Fundraising by Simone Lavallee
Little ghosts and goblins can wreak havoc on yards and pumpkins during Halloween. Have an all saints day cleanup!
Create a flyer about NFS TN and advertise locally with signs and in your local newspaper that you will be going around the day after Halloween cleaning up yards for a donation.
Head out the day after Halloween with rakes, gloves, and garbage bags. Patrol the local neighborhoods, looking for yards with a mess. Knock on doors and politely ask the homeowner if they would like you to clean up their yard. Hand them your flyer and explain what your group is doing. Find yards that need their leaves raked as well. Decide with the homeowner everything that you are going to clean up for them, negotiate a price, and get to work. Let the homeowner inspect your work before you leave and give them a thank you note. Happy Halloween!
