| Artists Stopping Slavery
Today's
economic climate impacts all of us, but none more than businesses run
by rescued victims of human trafficking. By supporting their
enterprises, we enable survivors to escape rampant poverty and forced
prostitution, live a life of dignity, earn a living wage, lessen their
vulnerability to being re-trafficked and even provide protection and a
role model for their daughters and other young girls.
Amy Courts,
singer and songwriter, is bringing tote bags and jewelry made by
rescued slaves to sell on her concert tours. She doesn't make a profit
by generously spreading awareness and helping these survivors. And
because we buy wholesale, some of the proceeds sustain Not For Sale
TN's local work. Volunteer Michael Reddish, pastor and graphic artist,
designed and printed tags to go on every item, spreading awareness of
modern day slavery. Definitely a win/win/win scenario!
Other artists have great potential to help women and children live a life of freedom by following Amy's example. Contact us to let us know that you'd like to participate as an artist stopping slavery.

Setting Captives Free
Victims
of human trafficking who work in public are seldom identified, due to
low levels of awareness by people who come into contact with them. Not
For Sale TN is delighted to launch a poster campaign to help identify
and rescue victims of slavery throughout Tennessee, and beyond.
Volunteer Lucia Callahan created a beautifully designed poster using
the eye-catching NFSTN photo of a woman with a hand over her mouth. The
poster contains the national hotline number which victims, or those who
suspect they know a victim, can call to get help or report suspected
cases of human trafficking. The poster also identifies a few 'red
flags' for identifying victims and a web address for more detailed
information.
We're
hoping to print thousands of copies in English and Spanish. We're also
making the poster available to download from our website. Not For Sale
State Directors will have access to use this around the country, and a
number have already expressed interest in doing so. Volunteer groups
will work to place these posters all over the state; in bars, clinics,
apartment complexes, bus stations and other public places.
The poster initiative is another example of innovative and effective volunteer action that typifies our work at Not For Sa le Campaign.

New Sex Slavery Case in Nashville
A new sex slavery case is under investigation in Nashville. Click here for the original article and here for a follow up report and video clip. (Please note that NFSTN does not condone showing victims or publishing their names.)
We rejoice that four young women are rescued and two perpetrators are off the streets. This is what all of us at Not For Sale Tennessee are fighting and a good reminder that this travesty happens in our own backyards.

Grant Awarded to Not For Sale Tennessee
A grant of $100,000 was awarded by Health and Human Services
(HHS) to seven local Nashville organizations who will work to
implement new anti-human trafficking programs throughout the Middle Tennessee area.
Not For Sale Tennessee was one of the grantees, receiving $7,000 towards
specific actions we plan to take to increase community awareness and develop
activism among volunteers.
Nashville Law Enforcement received funding for officer training throughout
Middle Tennessee about human trafficking. Other funded projects include an
Emergency Multilingual phrasebook to aid emergency room healthcare providers in
identifying victims (Doctors at War), the production of five public service
announcements which will use Not For Sale TN volunteers (Birds of
Prey), education/ training for after school staff (Interdenominational
Minister's Fellowship Peniel Initiative) and outreach and education to the
Hispanic Community (En Acción). Free For Life Ministries is the umbrella
grantee and will be administering the grant.
This award, given to only a few cities in the nation, will help us make real
headway in our efforts to reach and aid victims in our area. Not For Sale
TN is honored and grateful to be the first Not For Sale Regional Operation to
receive HHS funding.

The John School
The John School is an all day-Saturday event for first offender "Johns" (men arrested for soliciting prostitutes). Held every six weeks in Nashville, the school allows men to pay to attend the school rather than have the arrest on their record.
Not For Sale TN approached the school's director, Kenneth Baker, about the possibility of adding a segment of education on Human Trafficking to the curriculum and were graciously granted permission. Our purpose is to show Johns the ways they feed into the monstrous machine of human trafficking. Pimps turn to traffickers to meet demand created by Johns. Money paid by Johns funds organized crime and all its activities. We also want to show Johns, that the services they buy are too often against the will of the woman.
Sherry Allen and Derri Smith attended the full session of the school in late May, where Derri spoke to the men in attendance. Marna Jane Bevill and Christen Cates will share teaching duties for future schools, assisted by Sherry. This is a great opportunity: Slowing demand is a vital component in ending slavery! |
