Dear

Not For Sale Tennessee (NFSTN) is six months old and I can hardly believe all that has happened in our short history! In this, our first newsletter, read about ways some smart activists are working to end slavery.

Not For Sale Tennessee is organized and managed by a staff of volunteers, who are all committed to this cause. We're excited to bring you news and information every month and we welcome your feedback. If you'd like to get involved as a volunteer please email us at derri@notforsalecampaign.org.We look forward to hearing from you!

Not For Sale Groups

NFS Group
Pax Wiemers leads the first NFSTN group

Imagine a group of people from all walks of life learning about modern day slavery through movies, books, speakers, Bible study and discussion. Now picture them working together, each using their unique skills and experience, to tackle projects that effectively work to end slavery in our area and beyond. You're picturing a Not For Sale Tennessee (NFSTN) anti-slavery group.

One of these groups is led by Pax Wiemers. Pax has an unrivaled passion for our cause. In the last two months, his members hosted an art benefit with outstanding results, singers and songwriters from the group donated songs to raise funds and awareness, and two marathon runners wore NFSTN T-shirts to the Music City Marathon. Other members of the group are working on displays for our chocolate campaign, designed to bring free-trade chocolate to retail stores here in Tennessee.

Come join people who are making a difference in the lives of people without the power to help themselves, by starting a group in your church or school. NFSTN is here to support you with lots of resources and ideas.
Ten Minute Activism

This is the start of a regular feature that allows anyone - yes, even you- to get engaged in the fight against modern day slavery. Ten minutes may not seem like a huge contribution, but it's forward motion, and that's important.

This month, we're focusing on the young women at Angela's House, a shelter for rescued victims of human trafficking.  These women have shown they have the strength to walk through fire and come out with dignity, pride and a belief that they are in control of their lives.

We'd love all our readers to take ten minutes to write some words of encouragement to let the women at Angela's House know they don't stand alone. Your note or card can say anything from "You go, Girl!" to a heartfelt sentiment. We just want them to know that people are thinking about them.To protect their privacy, individual names can't be disclosed, so write your cards and letters with all the women at Angela's House in mind.

Here's where to send your letters:

Inner Harbour (for Angela's House)
Attn.: Maryann Smolko
4685 Dorsett Shoals Road
Douglasville, GA 30135

Watch Derri and Pax on TV

On April 7th, Derri and Pax appeared as guests on Open Line, a live interview show produced by open lineChannel 5. Several issues concerning human trafficking and modern slavery were discussed during the hour long program. You can watch it here in seven segments.
Activist Beth Wright used her connections and expertise in PR to open this door for us.
Fun Fundraising by Simone Lavallee

party hat Lawn Chair Movie Night

Drive-in movie theaters were an American staple during the 1950s and 1960s. Most of today's generation has never even heard of one, so recreate the fun for your next fundraiser. You may not be able to have an exact replica, but there are many ways to go about getting the feel of a drive-in movie. Project the movie onto a screen in your back yard and let everyone set up lawn chairs or blankets to watch. Charge an entry fee and have a concession stand to raise money. Have a countdown until the movie starts so everyone knows how long they have to buy snacks. Screen a classic that will be fun for everyone, or screen a few movies with the same theme (romance, horror, art-house). A great way to raise funds and spend a summer evening outside!
