Fall Home Improvement Ideas

Fall is one of the most popular seasons in Maine, with an endless list of outdoor activities to enjoy and beautiful scenery. However, it is also the time we all need to prepare our homes for winter. The list below will help remind you of things to accomplish before the snow arrives.

  • Home inspection. This allows you to catch small problems before they grow into large problems during the long winter months. Visit www.nachi.org (National Association of Certified Home Inspectors) to find an inspector near you.
  • Furnace tune-up. Many furnace maintenance companies have fall specials, so look for those when you are making an appointment to ensure your furnace is operating properly to keep you warm this winter.
  • Clean your chimney. A chimney sweep will remove any fire hazards or allow any animals that inhabit your chimney to leave safely.
  • Winterize pipes. This is a fairly inexpensive fall home improvement project that will prevent your pipes from freezing.
  • Clean your gutters. By cleaning your gutters, you will prevent ice buildup and decrease the risk of roof-related leaks.
  • Install insulation. Insulating your doors, floors and windows will prevent heat from escaping your home and save you money.
If a home improvement project puts pressure on your budget, visit one of our loan officers to find out more about applying for a loan from Skowhegan Savings, and help make your home improvements plans a reality.
