Greetings!
It's hard to believe it's already August and it won't be long before the yellow school buses are back on the roads. As a kid, I remember the butterflies in my stomach as I packed my backpack and boarded the bus for the first day of school each year. Some of your kids might be feeling the very same way - encourage them to have fun and learn all they can!
Here at Skowhegan Savings we're getting ready for the back-to-school season by accepting donations for school supplies now through September 2 at all ten locations. This is the seventh year we've helped the local schools by collecting supplies, keeping students equipped with what they need to learn and grow. To learn more about the program or to find out what donations are needed, please click here.
If saving for college has been in the back of your mind, start now! After helping three of my own children through college, I can attest to the importance of planning ahead. Continue reading this month's e-newsletter to find effective ways to save money and plan for college. And, for those of you heading off to college this year, check out our top three items you need for attending college in Maine, that you probably didn't think about.
If you are looking for some old fashioned Maine fun, visit the Skowhegan State Fair, August 11 through 20! It is the nation's oldest continuously running agricultural fair and boasts some of the best fair food around.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Sincerely,

3 Important Things for Attending
College in Maine
(that you might not have thought about)
It's that time of year; the kids are heading back to school and some students are heading off to college for the first time, so we've put together a list of the top three things for you will want (but might not have thought of) for attending college in Maine.
1. ATM Card. It doesn't matter if you're from "away" or currently live in Maine; an ATM card can be helpful so you don't have to carry around cash. Holding on to large amounts of cash, especially in a dorm room, is risky. Most Maine colleges have an ATM on campus. If you need an ATM card or if you need to open a local checking account, we offer several convenient locations.
2. Duct tape. Whether you are packing your boxes to move in, putting up posters around your dorm room, or if something breaks, Mainers will tell you duct tape can come certainly come in handy! Check out this site for ways college kids have used duct tape.
3. Snow Shovel. With the possibility of snow from November through April, it's important to be prepared. A small shovel can help clear a walk way, clean off your car or in a worst case scenario, dig it out! Check out this site for a wide selection of small compact snow shovel.
From all of us at Skowhegan Savings, we wish the best of luck to all the students heading back to school this month! | |
