Greetings!
Greetings from Skowhegan!
Our 140th Anniversary is well underway, with a kick-off event held on October 22. Together with our neighbor, the Skowhegan Free Public Library, who is celebrating their 120th birthday, we welcomed friends and neighbors to the Main Branch office for an evening filled with excellent music, food and birthday cake of course. I encourage you to take a look at the photo gallery on our Web site featuring images from the evening. The evening also provided a perfect opportunity for us to make an announcement: Skowhegan Savings will make a $100,000 donation to the Library's Project 2012 Campaign to bring this vital community resource into the 21st century. The Library is seeking $2 million to upgrade its facilities to be ADA compliant and provide the infrastructure that will ensure that it continues to meet the community's needs including: providing materials for enrichment and research tools for students and job seekers alike. We have now had our first snowfall, the trick-or treating is done and thoughts are turning towards the holidays. For the 21st year, our Main Office employees will be contributing food items and local grocery gift cards for 15 families in need this season through an effort coordinated by the Federated Church. As you plan for your own holiday giving, be sure to check out the many options provided by local vendors. On this day, we give thanks to all our Veterans for their service. Enjoy the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday! Sincerely, John Witherspoon President & CEO

Club Accounts Skowhegan Savings offers Club Savings Accounts to help people budget for their holiday and other expenses. This is an easy way to save up for anticipated expenses by making a weekly deposit in an amount of your choosing. While these accounts are available for any type of expense (vacation, anniversary, home improvement, etc.), it's common for people to put away a few dollars each week for the holiday splurge. Club Accounts are easy to open - with as little as $1.00 - and easy to manage. Just stop into your local branch today to get started. With a Skowhegan Savings Club Account, you may not have to rely on credit cards and face the bills in January. |

The Top 5 Reasons to Shop Local for the Holidays This holiday season why don't you check out the offerings at our local merchants for your gift giving needs? Here are five reasons why it's good for you and good for the community: 1) Grows the economy. Shopping local supports the business owners and employees in our hometowns - providing a much needed boost to the local economy. Over 90 percent of Maine's economy is comprised of small businesses - the shops and vendors that line our downtown Main streets and independent service and product providers that work out of the home in our towns and villages.
2) Unique gifts. You can be sure your gift will stand out. Whether you purchase pottery, fiber arts, a painting or a photograph from an artisan's studio, a gift basket filled with locally produced cheeses, syrups, jams and jellies, or a gift certificate for a useful service like auto repair, you can purchase items from merchants in Maine that you can't find anywhere else.
3) Convenience. Between work, school, childcare, elder care, volunteer projects and everything else you do - finding time to squeeze the shopping in can be a challenge. A quick stop between errands is all that's needed to start checking things off your holiday list. And you'll save money too since local shops are close by and often on your way to and from your usual destinations.
4) Customer Service. Nothing beats a friendly, familiar face to take the edge off the holiday rush. Local vendors are happy to have your business and will help you find the right gift and do it with a smile.
5) A little bit goes a long way. A coalition of New England business owners argues that if as few as five thousand households in the region shifted as little as 10 percent of their spending from national outlets to local vendors, thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in economic activity would come to the area. This happens from the local level and grows- if you spend $10 of your $100 grocery bill at the local orchard, farm stand or bakery, you contribute to the economic development of our region - and get all the benefits above as well. | |
