Greetings Everyone!
Today, as I was rummaging through all my holiday decorations and starting my design plan for the season, it dawned on me as to how many of us pull out the same old wreaths, trims and decorations and simply throw them up just as they always been. Now I'm a traditionalist like most of you, however, I do try a few simple ideas each season to keep things fresh; even if I am using all of the "same old stuff" from years past. With this in mind, I decided to put my ideas to paper and came up with my top Re-design tips for the season; I like to call them "PERSONAL TOUCHES". As always, I hope to inspire you to "Re-think, Re-new and most importantly Re-wind" this holiday season. So, without further ado, I present: |
"JNdesign Holiday Personal Touches"
Over the years I've collected dozens of beautiful Christmas balls, however, I noticed that as my children get older, the the tree is happily trimmed with adorable homemade ornaments and keepsakes leaving me with plenty of leftover balls. As I hate to leave any holiday decoration behind, I've found many uses for these leftovers:
My oldest son will be 9 next year...this means 9 years of pictures with Santa. I love them all, especially the ones that include my soon to be 5 year old. Every year I look forward to displaying all of these pictures together to show the wonderful timeline of how our family has grown. And, each year I choose a different method of display, here are my favorites:
- Place in small frames and wire to a foe wreath, carefully nestling the frames among the branches. For an extra touch, weave in a pretty holiday ribbon.
- Place in matted frames and cover mattes with holiday wrapping paper. Hang in a grid for a more contemporary display.
- Scan photos and send to a company like Snapfish to make a festive coffee table book. (also makes a great gift!)
Here in Southington, we have a wonderful town park filled with tall White Pines. Each Autumn, I take my two boys to play in the park and as they play, I collect all of the pinecones that fall to the ground. They come in all shapes and sizes so there perfect for using in all sorts of ways...plus they're free!
- Nestle into wreathes and swags.
- Use pretty bows to tie to packages, wine bags and candle holders (away from flame!).
- Hot glue to Styrofoam cones in different sizes for a festive holiday forest.
Like many of you, I have a few treasured holiday collections. My favorite is my collection of Snowbabies. Some were my Grandmother's, some were received to mark a special event, and most were the perfect gift from friends and family. Every fall, before the holiday buzz even begins, I take them out and set them up. When the Snowbabies are out in full display, you know the holidays are coming! Here are my favorite tips for the perfect display, any treasured collection will do:
- Location, location, location! In order to truly enjoy your display, you must find the perfect spot. I've found that any out of the way, level surface will do but mantles, bookshelves and some end tables to be best.
- Once you've chosen your perfect spot, set the scene! Use books to create staggered heights for more interest and cover with faux snow or a table cloth before setting up your collection.
- For added holiday sparkle, arrange lights under the snow or cloth...your display will come alive!
Hosting a holiday meal this year? Why not keep your table clear and bring your centerpiece up! Chandeliers are a great place to decorate for the season. Keeping that oversized centerpiece off the table creates a more intimate setting for your guest to enjoy. Here are my favorite ideas for a centerpiece above your head:
- Seasonal greens look festive when tucked around a sparkling chandelier. Fill in with berries, pinecones, or poinsettias for a more colorful display.
- Beautiful ornaments or snowflakes look especially festive when hung from fishing line and suspended from your fixture. Stager the heights for more interest.
- Have shades on your chandelier? Inexpensive white shades from the craft store can be covered in holiday fabric, fringe, sparkle...whatever you like to create a warm holiday glow!
I hope I've inspired you to change a few things with this years holiday decor. Just remember if you pull out your box of decorations and just can't come up with anything new, I'd love to help.
